Is it possible to exchange it with a cheaper one following these requirements:
- same socket
- same chip generation (Kaby Lake - Skylake - Coffee Lake)
- same chipset
Sorry, which ever model your broken motherboard is, try the like for like replacement with a new one even if it costs more. It should still pass as it is not an upgrade or downgrade.
As the others stated your mission _could_ be a story mission. Then budget would not even matter, even if it is stated by the customer. If you want to test this, you could save your game manually and then install something very expensive, therefore overreaching more than 10%, and send it back to the customer. If you do not get a 1 star rating for this job, it was a story mission indeed. Otherwise you can reload and try something else.
Have you tried it yet to install the exact 1:1 replacement that costs $170?

This all depends on what Motherboard you installed on the first story job.
You were unlucky to install the Gaming 5 in your build. I happened to install a Moritoni motherboard with Kaybe Lake CPU so I will be fine. I hope you get a good second hand coffee lake motherboard as your CPU will need that to work.
