Customer want's dual GPU but it won't fit in his case
Hi,

I have a customer who want's me to fit dual GPU's in his PC but they won't fit. First I ordered 2 MSI GTX 980 Ti's but those were not compatible with the mobo (needs crossfire). So I ordered 2 MSI R9 390X's but after placing one in the first slot on the mobo the second won't fit. Not in the second slot and not placed vertically either.

Worst part is I only had 2 days and I'm on the last day now. How do I fix this? Buying a larger case or a different mobo even work? Or will it not let me install those (normally you can only replace those parts needed for the job, other parts get a post it and you can only use their own part.

Is it possible you had this same customer in the past in your career mode? Typically this seems to only happen to people when they had the same customer in the past to ask them to build a new computer for them and they usually built them a computer as part of a previous job. Then later that same customer returns for an upgrade and you can't complete the job because you built them in a small case previously.

Maybe your customer has a non-dual GPU compatible motherboard?

Yes, I did indeed build this customer his PC earlier. If I had used a larger mobo I would probably have been able to fit the second card below the first one, but alas. Guess I need to keep in mind with future builds that I make sure the mobo and the case will be able to fit 2 large graphics cards.

So what should I do? If I complete the job this way the customer won't be happy, so no 5 star rating. But what if I quit the job? Will I still get a bad review or will I get no review at all?

The mobo does have 2 PCI-e slots, but they are too close together to fit both cards. I suppose I could try with 2 single slot cards, but I doubt I'll be able to get the required 3D Mark rating with those cards.

The case supports a vertical mounted GPU, but the first GPU gets in the way when I try to mount the second one vertical. Tried installing the bottom (vertical) GPU first, but then it is impossible to install the horizontal GPU, so no solution there.

Do you still remember what case and motherboard you used? Just wanted to try and replicate on free build.

Unfortunately this is a problem with this game. You never know when a customer job will return later with an upgrade request. What you can do is if you remembered to create a new manual save before accepting each job and again before turning in a job (Which I highly suggest everyone do with this game) you could just go back and load a previous save and then build it differently.

Yeeeees..

I learned the lesson by mistake; if you build a new PC, remember that it will come back later for another job. I already got sick overheating 3 cpu, unfortunately ..:steamsad::pcbs::pcbs_case:

I have the PC in the shop now, so I'll check.

Case: MSI MPG SEKIRA 500G
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-B250M-Gaming 5
GPU's: MSI Radeon R9 390X GAMING 8G

Good idea about free build. I'm going to see if there is any combo that will fit and also get me the required 3D Mark score.

I do tend to save the game every day before collecting on the jobs I did that day and if all were 5 star reviews I overwrite that safe before I accept the new jobs. But I don't keep that many safes that I still have the one from before I did the original build.

But I sure will keep this kind of thing in mind with future builds!

Too bad though, IRL I would have told the customer that I would have to change his mobo/ case to get the job done. But that's not possible in this game.

Thanks for you advise everyone!

I am happy to help and partner with Aquafawks as well.

About the cases; after i realized that the services were returning i always have super case in my stock .. :steamhappy::pcbs_case::retrochip::cms18nomoney::espresso:

I've confirmed that is is possible to use 2 DFL Radeon R9 290 GR8TOR GPU's to get the required 3D Mark scode. So I'm going to try that. I might even be able to do that within the budget, but I still have already bought 4 GPU's I can't use for this build... O well, I'll find some other build to put those in.

Yeah, I need to figure out a good case that is not too expensive as my default case for these things. Something that is easy enough to build and will support any possible future wishes from my customers. Thanks.

I did it, I completed the build just under budget with dual GPU's and reached the 6832 score in 3D Mark. Got a 5 star review when I collected.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Just so you are aware: If this customer is returning for a second time to ask you to do "more work" on their computer then that means they are a "Story job" and not a "Random job". Story jobs can be sent over budget as far as you want and they will always pass with 5 stars. It's only "Random jobs" that you have to comply with the budget requirements.

I did not know that. That's good to know! Thanks!
