Where are the laptop computers?
was this a major design oversight or is there any valid reason why laptops are not part of the game? i think a majority of people own laptops over desktop computers, if not, both.

Laptops, especially many modern laptops, are constructed in a fundamentally different way than desktop PCs. In a desktop, most components are modular and can be easily replaced by the end user. Laptops are not designed that way. Many components are soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be replaced without a prohibitive amount of money and competent technical work. In some laptops (like many modern ultrabooks) even the RAM and storage device cannot be swapped out. Each model or generation of laptop from each manufacturer is built differently. It's not standardized the way that desktops are. So having them in a game like this simply wouldn't work. It's impractical.

Because normal people cannot build, modify or fix Laptops, except to change the memory or maybe a hard drive. This game is for building desktop Personal Computers towers of the gaming variety. Laptop are too compact and complex to be interesting.

so how are laptops fixed then? the customer has to throw them away and buy a new one instead of sending it to be repaired? why are refurbished laptops sold then?

"laptops are too complex to be interesting", this is a contradiction. the player is not a normal person either, they are a computer repair person. there are also laptops specifically made for gaming, not to mention a laptop IS a PC.

why would a laptop not be a personal computer?

Sorry but a laptop IS a PC.

("A personal computer (PC) is a multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it feasible for individual use.")

It depends on the situation, but *if* a laptop is to be repaired due to the failure of some component attached to the motherboard, then the entire motherboard has to be replaced. In a lot of cases, yes, it's actually more economical to buy a new laptop than to fix the old one. I work in a computer repair shop, so I know this from experience.

And, as I mentioned, unlike the case for desktops where a relatively few models of motherboard can handle pretty much any situation, most laptop models have unique and often proprietary designs, and they're replaced often as new generations are made.

Also, refurbished doesn't necessarily mean that something was broken and then fixed, it can mean that something was acquired used, worked just fine, and was checked for problems, cleaned of dust and gunk, and a fresh OS install done. That accounts for a lot of refurbished systems.

Most laptops are sent to a specialist who takes the parts directly from a company or directly to the company that does the same thing. The difference is that the company that made the motherboard has all the parts required to fix it as where anyone else doesn't.

Laptops are designed in a way where nothing is particularly easy to replace, therefore you would have to spend hours trying to unsolder the parts just to put new ones one, and once again this is all done with a specific motherboard spec manual, because it's all chips when it comes to that, beyond the super obvious parts to replace like memory and hard drives. It would be an entirely different game if it came to laptops.

And it's worth pointing out that, even though soldered components can technically be replaced (by a skilled technician with the right equipment), the cost in labor hours to do it is often not worth it if the consumer is paying for it. Cheaper just to replace the whole board or buy a new system, at least if you're talking about a cheaper laptop. More expensive ones may be economical to repair.

Look at it this way: Can you build your own laptop? Are there parts and cases you can buy to assemble into your own laptop? Are laptop motherboards interchangeable with other cases- say, can you put the guts of an Asus GL702ZC into a MSI GX60?

If your answer is no, congratulations, you've just figured out why there is no laptops in the game.

no but you can still repair a broken laptop.

Repairing a broken laptop is fundamentally different, if your CPU is damaged in a laptop the cost of replacing it is usually more than just buying another latop due to the amount of work required to take it apart to remove the CPU which means dismantling the entire cooling system possibly damaging other components and then putting it all back together. So goes for a motherboard...

Refurbished laptops are usually just cleaned up and have had the hard drive replaced with a newer bigger model and the screen replaced. Unless they have ram expansion but other than that you will not find laptops with replaced cpu's or GPU's, I speak from experience on that matter.

So why bring laptops into the game simply to replace an HDD/SSD or add an extra Ram slot? Thats a whole lot of work for very little pay off. Many laptops are designed like phones in that they dont last that long, even expensive gaming laptops will usually be replaced by the average end user within 4 years.

It's already been explained to you by multiple people why this is not true in the same way that it is for desktops and why this wouldn't be practical for this game, please try to read and understand what we've written.

just becuase its not easy to replace every single part in a laptop, doesnt mean its impractical. you also fail to realize that it is easy to replace a hard drive or ram, like others have said so here. you can also replace the screen or remove viruses in it at least.

Why lose time to developing in this way. There is so much to do with desktops. I prefer that developers continue in the same direction they started, than spend time and energy on this rather ordinary side of laptops. it's my opinion.
Laptops are not coming to this game. They never will and people need to just stop asking. It's physically not possible due to how laptops are designed. There's nothing to discuss on this subject. It's just not going to happen.
