i9-7980XE Performance
How come the i9-7980XE isn't any faster than the TR 1950X?
Even with OC I only get about 15k.
Post your scores :)

You must be doing something terribly wrong. I wanted to test it myself here so I set up two systems just now in free build. EVGA DG-84 full tower case for both. 1500 watt power supply, the same case fans, the same corsair 3-fan AIO, the same Corsair 4700 mhz ram (4 sticks for each system for the minimum for quad channel), and the same two Zotac AMP! Extreme GTX 1080 Ti's.

System A
AMD Threadripper 1950X on Gigabyte X399 Designare motherboard

System B
Intel Core I9-7980XE on Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard.

Now bear in mind I did -NOT- overclock either of these systems yet. I just installed them 100% stock and installed 3dmark and clicked run. But, do also bear in mind that system A does default to 2666 Mhz ram, and System B does default to 2400 Mhz ram.

Results:
System A (AMD) - 15,685 3DMarks. 17,660 Graphics. 9,602 CPU.
System B (Intel) - 16,171 3DMarks. 17,660 Graphics. 10,943 CPU.

So yes the Intel systems are faster.

I got 20k score with core i9 and asus 1080ti

And other people have achieved 24k with AMD Threadripper and overclocking, what's your point?

I was just proving it's faster than AMD is all. It needs some binning action to get some high scores, I don't have the time or effort to try.

I'm talking about the CPU score only!

Read the first post again lmao

You're probably using different RAM when making your comparison between the i9 and 1950x, RAM makes a HUGE difference in CPU score with these high core-count chips.

foxfags first post states his scores showing the opposite of your hypothesis. I also happen to have a comparison saved which shows:
  • RAM clock speed :: CPU model // CPU score
  • @2133MHz RAM :: 1950x // 8753
  • @2133MHz RAM :: 7980xe // 10525
  • @4700MHz RAM :: 1950x // 9602
  • @4700MHz RAM :: 7980xe // 10943
The people with >25k score on AMD chips are top-bin sampled with high OCs

Re-read my post again: CPU score only is higher and I demonstrated this.

i9 7980 xe stock + 4700hz + 2 1080 ti extreme = 17204, 17777 graphics 14547 cpu
tr 1950x stock + 4700hz + 2 1080 ti extreme = 16807, 17777 graphics 12841 cpu

i9 is marginally faster, havent even OC'd yet

It's not going to be extremely hugely faster, it's just an 18 core (Intel) vs 16 core (AMD), just +2 cpu cores. The main advantage is ram speed for the Intel system. I was playing with a 7980XE system and had ram at 5333 Mhz easily. I haven't done much overclocking with threadripper in-game, but I think the TR-1950X systems need a rare binned chip to get that kinda ram speed.

I'm kinda off topic here but who cares

Good luck with the i9, it's a terrible overclocker, made even more difficult by it's 100MHz stepping compared to TR's 25MHz. Buuuut because of it's high base score and higher core count it factors increadibly well with RAM speed. I got an extra 1500 (!!!) points in timespy CPU score with a stock i9 over a binned OCed TR, both with ~5600 MHz RAM (safe voltage).

If those fella's with the 25k scores threw a 7980XE into their binned RAM rigs I reckon they'd get outstanding scores. Overall:
  • 24426 :: 26904 GPU (+342 +1004) // 16052 CPU (4263MHz "oc")

The i9 is definatly a better timespy scorer than the TR when using top-binned RAM, I think we can chalk this thread as answered hah
