Best CPU to Overclock 5400?
Hello!

I got the job of CPU overclocking for 5400 MHz and getting 4014 points on 3D Mark, I decided to choose i9-9900K for its factory clock being 5000 MHz with 1070 AMP from zotac and 8GB (2x 4GB) from Corsair 2666 MHz, 120GB HD, 600W Shean, and SilverStone PS 14 (spending all the money)

However, the processor was by no means stable and cool (I put the bios at "x54" and tested at all voltages) when I reached the "2.00" voltage the CPU broke.

Does anyone have any suggestions / help to collaborate with an overclocked starter, or do they know if it is impossible to achieve such frequency at the moment?

Thanks

I wanted to remind y'all that in PCBS multiple small radiators will give you better cooling performance than multiple large ones. I know it is in opposite of real life but that's how it works in-game. For example: 6 x 120mm radiators would cool better than 2x 360mm in PCBS.
Right.
Or to say in other words: The game calculates with ft³/min and not with the surface area.
Example (values are examples, not taken out of the game): Two 120 mm radiators with 100 ft³/min each is better than a 360 mm with 170 ft³/min.

The same with other coolers and fans, as far as I know the game also adds intaking and outtaking fans together (in real life you don't double the airflow if one fan blows out and an identic blows in). Just ft³/min counts...

Start binning and hope you get lucky. It's all about luck. There is no guaranteed way to for sure get any processor that can do 5.5 Ghz in this game.

Well i have been binning 250 x 8086 and 250 x 9900k but alot has changed in the game.
Ofcourse i cheated with the money to see if its possible to get these speeds

Aim was to find a cpu able to run the fabled 5400.
In these 500 cpu i found no cpu able to do 5.4 Ghz
The highest i got this far is 5.3 which came at a temperature just before it started throtle.
The game has been changed in many ways as posted elsewhere (reddit f.example)
Adding more radiators not really gives a much better cooling capacity because they changed the effect of these as well.
The weird thing is that i had many cpu able to run at very low temperatures and most of them failed to even overclock just beyond the standard clocks for example a cpu hardly getting 50 c when given 1.7 volt was set to run at 5.1Ghz failed to run at 5.2. When i upped the voltage the temps stayed very low till i put in 2.0 then it died. But all that time did hardly showed higher temps before putting load on it. So you say thats bad luck but i had about 25 of them during the test and non actually clocked much better. The only one i found is the one i mentioned getting 98.86 C at 5.3 Ghz.
Graphics cards is a different matter if you follow Turbo its great guide you will find good clocking gpu but sadly the limit is still the same 2100 is the max you can get.
The post about pumping up memory and get the needed goal does not apply either, the game this far has simply not responded at all on memory speeds over the asked mhz
The EVGA DG cases are my favorites for running high speed systems because even with hot videocards you get the goals often easily with this case especially if you fill the empty spaces not needed for a radiator to the brim with loads of 104 cfm fans.
Why they changed the effect of multi radiators is kinda sad but as far as i know adding many radiators in real life does not have much effect either.
I have had fase change system in the paste s well and that worked well, till newer cpu and gpu showed cold bugs and problems with these systems and i'll be honest the noise is no fun either.
For short times its bearable but when you are gaming for hours you slowly become deaf.
After the 500 fails i gave up trying to get the higher clocks and when a mission is asking a speed over 2250 Mhz i reject them because its way too much hassle and costs to find that one lucky cpu running higher speeds.
I actually often reject also the higher overclock demands for gpu with dual cards as well 2050 is kinda the limit i do accept.

Do you have any posts by the developers stating that this is fact? Because there have been no posts anywhere with any patch notes stating that they ever made any changes to the cooling system in this game. Perhaps you're just not using the correct case. The Raijintek Enyo is what you need to be using for water cooling with two loops, one for CPU one for video cards. As far as I'm aware adding more radiators still adds more cooling. Perhaps you're just not looping them correctly. Do note that additional radiators do add more cooling even if the fans aren't connected or spinning on them. You should be able to build a big enough loop with that case in this game to never have any CPU thermal throttle no matter how far it overclocks, if you build it correctly.

I've just bought a few 9900K to see what they would achieve and the second one was stable at 5400mhz..

Congrats on mostly winning the silicon lottery.

I'll post again: In regards to any overclocking of any processor in this game there *IS* a silicon lottery. Just because you were able to overclock that one specific 7740x to 5490 Mhz does not mean that anyone else would be able to achieve the same results with any other 7740x in this game.

Hi there, i'm having trouble overclocking CPU to 5500mhz. I've tried with i9 9900k and 8086k but even with double radiators (360+240) they both were 94°- 95° at idle. I tried to change both cpu ratio and multiplier but had no luck. Does anyone have a clue? I also had a lian-li o11 XL case and 2 arctic F12 fans, with an asrock z390 taichi.

Read my earlier posts in this thread: It's all random based on silicon lottery in this game. Both the maximum stable overclocked clock speed and the temperature of which the processors run at (idle and load) is a random variable assigned to each processor when you either buy it from the store or pull it out of inventory in free build. You might have to go through a couple hundred processors to find any that can do that stable. Or you might never find one. It's random. You could go through 100 processors and most of them idle at 90c then find one that idles at 50c suddenly. But if your goal is 5500 Mhz then try these processors: 10900K, 11900K, and 11900KF. All 3 of those have a default clock speed (before overclocking) of 5300 Mhz so it wouldn't be very much further for those chips to go to 5500 Mhz and you would have a higher chance of reaching it using those chips compared to say a 9900K that defaults to 5000 Mhz. Also try using the Raijintek Enyo case and fit 7~9 radiators in it so the chips can run cooler.

Alas i'm stuck at 9th gen of intel, i have few days to satisfy the order and some tight budget (3250). Pretty hard challenge...

You didn't say that it's for a customer job. You just said you were trying to overclock a CPU. I was thinking that could be free build. But maybe this is where you're learning that not all customer requests are possible to be completed in this game. Sometimes customers do send us requests that are impossible and can not be done. This might be one of those.

Just an FYI, but the cheaper RGB watercooling heatsinks seemed to be garbage. At least need the $70 waterblock.
I am pretty sure the 9900KS is the only processor that will reach 5.5Ghz I've had a 5.6Ghz but that was one I binned for. You might get lucky and buy 10 9900k and find 1 that will hit 5.5Ghz but it will be far and few between. The KS is easier.
