I don't know if what you asked has happened to anyone around, but due to the current lack of activity, with what... 5-7 active peeps answering questions, your "survey" will not be very conclusive.
On the pinned topics, there is a Discord link, that place is way more active.
But honnestly, if you want to get a job into PC building, it will probably be more your background IRL with PC's, like :
- since when you have been tweaking them
- have you built your own, etc
- How many personal, friend's and neighbors "diagnose" and "fix" solutions you have performed
- Etc
That may be more impactful in order to get into that working environement IMO.
I mean my mom had a broken PSU, I diagnosed it (but haven't fixed it as I had no spare PSU to try it out and confirm, so I resorted to a local shop), I had a MOBO fried (Thanks to my ex girlfriend creating a huge short in the appartement), I knew it was mobo and changed it, I had a GPU dying, and one from a neighbour as well lately, diagnosed it and changed them, I had a PC built back in the days, when I was only fiddling with older PC's (around 1995, when you needed jumpers to set HDD as slaves, etc) and I asked that PC to come without any OS (as I already had one on CD) and it had a bad RAM preventing me from installing OS, I called it right, and the shop had to change it, etc.
That's probably more that kind of stuff, + your knowledge on current parts and stats, that will get you a job.
Way more than saying "Oh I play PCBS, I know how to repair and build PC's"
It's like asking for a job at Delta Airways, and saying, "Oh I play that nice flightsim game, I can surely do it IRL"
PCBS has some good real life counterparts, like how you streamline choosing the parts for a new build, checking if parts will fit into the case, what PSU you should use, etc.
But it's not realistic enough to think you can build a PC IRL without more knowledge.
So, after such a long and meandering post, I can take it that you never got a job by referencing PCBS in a job application.
"Hey I played Car mechanic simulator 2018, could you pay me to work in your garage ?"
Yeah right...
That's not how real life works, real life is not a game. It's getting your hands dirty into the REAL stuff that will maybe get you a job.
And surely you would probably get mocked more than it would get you a job.
A little over sensitive
I just wondered as it is tagged as a 'simulator'. I mean all you need to do is look at versions of the 'simulators' FSX and X-Plane which have even been approved by the FAA for as part of flight training as educational tools.
So, I wondered if the same was happening here.
In PCBS the overclocking in-game is similiar but not even remotely close to how you overclock in real life. In PCBS the prices don't reflect current real life prices. In PCBS the thermal management and how radiators and cooling works is completely different vs real life (and not even close to reality).
You can't apply anything in PCBS to real life what so ever. Even removing motherboards in-game has you do extra steps that aren't necessary in real life. No one should play PCBS and then presume to think they understand how to assemble or build a real computer in the real world.
Oh, so a product can only be considered a 'simulator' if it is a flight simulator.... interesting.
And at one point you infer that PCBS is simulating (They aren't even simulating the same thing) but then go on to say it does not simulate critical aspects needed to be considered a simulator. Which is it?
it is a Game!!! i would not trust someone who plays flight simulator with my life, that's why there are pilot's licenses. i would compare this game to car mechanic simulator.
it will teach you how to put compatible components together, e.g it does not go into bios flashing mobo's, or air pressure inside the chassis.
it will not give you a qualification, it is not a college course.
Also a friend of mine got a min wage PC building job without any GCSE's or exp, through universal credit.
i built my first pc without playing this game, it's not hard if you have a general knowledge of computers and some time to research.
(simply watch a couple youtube vids like JayzTwoCents live stream where he compares it to real life)
Good answer
I knew my little simulator of a thread would product some interesting results.
So why is it not called 'PC Building Game'?
Myself, I have been building them in a professional and personal capacity since when the only PnP available was between a couple.
So the correct title would then be "PC, the building and repairing game"
But let's be honnest... that's not really a catchy title isn't it ?
Btw... do you go ask if the game got you a job IRL in every game's forum where "Simulator" is in the title ?
I wonder what were the answers you got in there ?
- Euro Truck simulator
- American truck simulator
- Train simulator
- Car mechanic simulator
- Surgeon simulator
- Farming simulator
- Etc
I'll just leave a link here from the steam shop search with "simulator"
There are some funny upcoming titles honnestly...
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=simulator
You surely then have plenty more places to go ask the same question now, do you ?
Oh and btw OP, has THE SIMS ever got you a date IRL ? I wonder because it's also a "simulator"
On my travels through your suggestions, I will happily inform people that it was you, yourself that suggested I ask 'the' question.
And if I told you the Sims did actually end up in a date you would just say I was fibbing, so no point really.
