I'll just say i believe the reason it has a fairly low player base is probably because most RTS fans haven't even heard of the game. I my self had never heard of this game until 2 weeks after it was released. Found it by chance, my bet is the same thing for others. The devs really should have got onto the big RTS youtube channels and gave some free codes to them to advertise their game in my opinion. I got my buddy to buy it so we could do some online together and even he had never heard of it before and were big RTS fans.
Just remember though you can play 2 hours and if you don't like it or don't think its worth it you can refund through steam with no issues because honestly only you your self can decide if its worth the price.
The focus is given on fights, and I do appreciate a lot the way the buildings are set at « pre-determined » locations.
As for the 10 squads limits… How often have you reached this limit in MP games ? I have played about 70 hours since the release, and 20 hours during the beta, mainly in MP. I never actually reached this limit.
On paper it sounds lame, only 10 squads max, and can't choose where buildings go. But trust me once you play you'll realize it works really well. You usually won't reach 10 squads in multiplayer, and any more than that and the micro would be really hard. For buildings they create pathways through the settlement and chokepoints to defend / walk through, also does it really matter if the house is 3 more feet to the left? Not really a city building game where you will be building large cities, your attention will be way more on the field and on the action
