That said, I think it's fine to just pick what you like, since you'll eventually have one of each character for the respective bonus they provide anyway.
I started with the Ranger and beat the first boss on my third run, but I suppose that's mainly because the playstyle clicked with me.
Farm a handful of times the resources needed to upgrade the city and then you can branch out to the other classes which come online with all those improvements.

Over level 10: Warrior (berserker with dmg reduction, nigh unkillable)

Early: Melee warlock (hp on essence)
Late: Fire Sorceror (hp & mana on crit)

I miss my old priest from the first game but I have to say I am enjoying paladin very much.
