I haven't tried all of them, but I feel like Paladin would make for a good starter class since you get a healing spell on top of your potion(s).

That said, I think it's fine to just pick what you like, since you'll eventually have one of each character for the respective bonus they provide anyway.

I started with the Ranger and beat the first boss on my third run, but I suppose that's mainly because the playstyle clicked with me.

IMO Paladin will get you far fresh in the game with little to no upgrades with just the heal alone. I got up to like the 5th area with just one - two city upgrades after being frustrated with starting with Ranger.

Farm a handful of times the resources needed to upgrade the city and then you can branch out to the other classes which come online with all those improvements.

Start with the ranger till level 5(attack power for all other classes) then move to the paladin. After that you can use any class you like.
Paladin for Safe Discovery.
Wizard for a more rewarding Discovery.
If you're able to kite and use your wasd-skills the wizard and ranger are fine classes to begin with, as you can get pretty far into the game with them, bringing back lots of loot. they aren't as gear dependent as the melee classes.
I couldn't start with Paladin or Warrior, just kept dying really fast lol. Wizard was really easy for me to start with,

Under level 10: Paladin
Over level 10: Warrior (berserker with dmg reduction, nigh unkillable)

Strong contenders
Early: Melee warlock (hp on essence)

Late: Fire Sorceror (hp & mana on crit)
tried wizard, but paladin is way easier for solo players
Conjuration Wizard has very easy gameplay (respec and take all levels out of fireball once you hit level 10 so you can more consistently get spell upgrades for hydra). Getting to 10 can be a bit of a slog, but at that point you're still just learning the basic controls so it doesn't matter much I think.
Start with Ranger because it's easy to play and basic ATK power will help all of your other classes immensely. Paladin is a rough start IMO and it helps to have the atk buff from ranger as well as some funding to pump into pally before starting that one

just my cents

Paladin and wizard are both extremely easy to start. I personally like wizard more cause an upgraded fireball destroys groups so quickly with very little risk.
I personally found paladin a very good one to start with. With just a bit of extra mana regen from wizard and a regen trinket or two I can spam my AoE and heal when necessary without too much worry. I immediately went all in on strength for armor and a little bit of extra health. The first run was a bit rough but after spending the points from my first few level ups and achievements it has been smooth sailing. Every run I have gotten one boss further so far (on the 3rd boss now).

I miss my old priest from the first game but I have to say I am enjoying paladin very much.
