Returning to town
Is there a way to do so without dying or abandoning your run? I've gone completely through the first boss and still haven't figured out how. I've got a ton of money and resources on me and I'd hate to have to lose almost half of it just to go back.

Only way is to completely beat the game.

You can send your loot back to town via the lightning chicken.

Otherwise pay the tax!

You can lower the fee by building and upgrading the church.

Well that's certainly a choice.

Thats the genre.

Its a rogue-lite.

In the first HoH you could die without having sent back anything at all and lose a ridiculous amount. You are now enjoying a much easier go of it.

This is the game rules.
It's fair, just imagine your gain -40% before you die lol

Like mentioned above, when you die you just loose 40% which is very kind because HOH1 you loose everything!!!!

I dont know why there are still mechanics in games that delay my progress in them.
Do they not want me to experience the game? Or is frustration what they want me to experience.

Id rather get less reward and not see a reduction in earnings on death than get more and see that reduction.

Or get this, the death tax actually does something in the world, like them being used to change the game world, or have some impact other than as an F you when you die.

Just cause something it's more 'kind' than HoH1 doesn't mean it's a good choice. Those two things are not exclusive. I get why it's there but it sucks and I hope they give an option in the future to remove it completely. Think Torchlight or PoE - you get portal scrolls.

I'm getting burnt out on Forest I and Forest II.
Kids shouldn't play games

It's just RNG like every other aspect of these kinds of games. Gear, trinkets, etc.

You might find a bird and get to offload stuff. Or you might not and lose a chunk of it.

Upgrade church to reduce losses.

Or you can take full control and get good enough to just clear the run.

You are describing a rogue game... you play to die, learn, get better, then live to die again... literally the point of a rogue game

The tax bit confuses me then, if you're always going to get back to the village by dying or beating the game, the only way I'm going to not have to pay the tax is when I'm done with the game. Just drop less resources and remove the tax, same result.

It'd be alright if there was a thunder bird after a boss or you could post a villager to pick stuff up as a reward for boss clears.

The loss of resources is an incentive to git gud.
Also, welcome to roquelikes, i guess this has to be rather new to you since you do not get what metaprogression is?

You're not accounting for mechanics that lower tax or how the rest of the economy is balance.

What this does is improve gains in the late game and rewards successful runs more. Your system would keep gains the same but nerf them in late game + successful runs, your suggestion would just make the game grindier.

I completely agree. Doing it this way is just plain mean-spirited and adds nothing to the game except frustrating the player. Poor design choice imo.

Reverse them and make those mechanics increase the haul instead. Very simple to make this mechanic still work, but the opposite (positive) way. That would mean it feels positive and not negative. Gaining more rather than losing less is just a better feeling for the player.
