Is this for real?
So every time I die at the first main boss (Totems), I have to restart at my town and do the entire run again? 2 forest levels, 2 dungeon levels and the boss?

Yeah right.

Since every death but one has been due to a random boulder falling on me that I can do nothing about, this game is ragequit material.

Congratulations. You have discovered roguelikes.
there's pattern on ground where boulders drop
Once you've defeated the totem, you can skip it on your next run.
There's also a path from the first forest to a portal room that can be unlocked under certain conditions.
iPad kid detected.

Every game is worse for being a roguelike. Immediately lose interest when I see that tag. It's just an excuse to re-use a small number of assets, force you to replay the same levels over and over with minimal permanent progression each run, and call it a full game. It feels like design regression back to the 8-bit/16-bit era, when at least hardware limitations warranted that kind of design. These kind of games don't respect the player's time at all. I don't see the appeal.
60% of my playtime in this game is sitting in a quiet corner waiting for health and mana to recharge. So tedious.
the totem boss is easy though, i literally killed it first try with the ranger that apparently everyone says is terrible.

Besides, i LIKE doing the whole run, that's how you accrue a whole bunch of trinkets and start getting some of those sweet set bonuses.
The boulders only drop when you step on the large trigger pad. Once you know to look for them they're everywhere.

Great news then. You can get basically this game as a non-Roguelike. It's called Hammerwatch II. Heroes of Hammerwatch is the Roguelike spinoff of the main series. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1538970/Hammerwatch_II/

Dude this game is like "Dead Cells" in the sense that each time you go at it you start a new run

You get to keep 60% of the material (unless you give it to the lightning bird, then you get more)

The idea is that every time you return to town, you become a little bit stronger, and get a little bit further, dying simply means you have reach your characters current limit, and you need to return to town to power up

if you press G and go to the "Titles" tab you can also see the permanent stat buffs all your characters have earned you

So my advice to you is this: You're not supposed to get to the end within your first 10 runs
And try get each character to level 10 (so soon as you get one to 10, drop it and move to the next character)
And that will be your starter stat boost (Theif grants additional 1.5% Gold gain per level if you're low on funds)

How do you skip areas? I have defeated the first boss, the totem, i got through the temple and died in the catacombs/crypt. That's a long ass walk back. If there is a shortcut to skip straight to the temple please please please share.

When you go through the Forest at the beginning with a character you've beaten the first boss with, the goblin camp will be opened up instead of having the large Blockade. That's your skip passed the first boss. As you progress and unlock the Dark Citidel, that will be your skip for the second or third bosses based on the amount of candles you light in it.

Try dying in the final boss fight and realizing you have to go through MOST of the previous stages. All over again.

Just let me savescum. I do NOT care for that crap and I'm so tired.

Don't assume every single death is because you've reached your limit. Some are by mistake and they're treated equally.

Remember playing Contra back in 1986 and having to restart the game when you died at the final Boss? You did it and you liked it. Then you got gud and finally beat it.

Weak times create weak men.
