Upgrading equipment vs buying?
Is it worth upgrading low level equipment if you like the enchant on it? Or should you focus on buying your way up?

So you can level something up to 10 times (As far as I can at least) and it takes a fair slew of iron to do it, but it can be very useful to keep something or enchantment stones for other gear you want to enchant.

Just an alternative to using your resources if you ask me, but you always want to look for the next best item for your build or keep a few sets in case you want to swap it around.
You'll want higher base level gear since you can only upgrade 10 levels (items can go to +15 if you get lucky with an imp however), but you can also as far as I can tell only buy gear up to level 30, so eventually you'll need to find gear out in the wild if you want over level 30 gear

i wouldn't upgrade gear until you have a high quality gear at least level 20.
You don't need to upgrade anything before hitting ng+ and even then you can make do until you hit a wall.
all this is of course if your resources are limited

Neither is worth it. You get loot drops according to the area level and the upgrades of an item is regularly limited to 10ilvl above the base ilvl.

So the higher the base ilvl the better. Upgrading early is only a nice bonus which can help you out, but you will not use the items for long.
loot drops according to the area level, the class you are using and the type of hat or helmet you are using. And lvl up one character for high lvl gear, people do ranger or wizard for good gear that you can put on anything. And now your question, I mean, if you can afford it, you should, if you need it to complete ng0.

How does the hat specifically affect things? And thank you everyone else for the responses.
