For now you have to quit to save that run, reload, then make/continue different character.
this can be taken advantage of multiplayer though. have someone host, then you can join the lobby and cycle with your characters if you were to die to avoid the hp debuff.
we did this method defeat avatar on ng+3. although you wont have trinkets or anything, but you at least have like 9 characters to cycle through and your potions to use lol.
Right now there isn't an option to quit to menu on a single player run, sadly.
Maybe in HoH3 we get a switch character option AND a "quit to town" / "quit to main menu" option, who knows...
Seriously though, I'd like that full range of options both in HoH1 and HoH2 someday.
