Hammerwatch 2 didn't sell well (for a lot of reasons, not all of which can be blamed on it not being Heroes of Hammerwatch 2). Sadly, part of signing on with a publisher typically means handing over some of the ownership or control of your game (usually to a benefit, as the publisher will handle things that a dev may not wish to allocate time/energy towards). Similarly, the Hammerwatch 1 remaster has issues with every single campaign that can render them unplayable. With it no longer being profitable, the publisher chose not to support the title further.
Crackshell left Heroes of Hammerwatch 1 (released prior to signing on with Modus) in a broken state for over a year while they worked on Hammerwatch 2.
Heroes of Hammerwatch 1 has since been fixed and is a lot of fun with friends in co-op. I can definitely recommend it if you're looking for a roguelike experience with persistent progression.
Hammerwatch 1 (not the anniversary edition remaster) is a gauntlet-style RPG with some fairly long campaigns and can also be a lot of fun with friends if you're looking for that sort of experience. If you ever played Gauntlet at the arcade, its probably one of the closest modern experiences.
Ahh that clears things up ty. Was just curious to the situation as it sounded like Crackshell couldn't even work on HM2 even if they wanted to (in order to fix it) from what I've read.
They're self published now from what I understand so hopefully none of this abandoning a game to work on something else happens again.
