Imp boosting your equipment

I like how that miniscule helper sometimes, rarely, levels up your equipment.

You can upgrade your stuff by 10 LVLs ("ilvl" in the game) at the blacksmith next to the weapon shop. I had a bow that I upgraded 9 levels before running out of iron. The imp then upgraded it another 5 levels during the run, so now it is 4 levels higher than would have been possible at the blacksmith.

HOWEVER, this has never happened with equipment that I had fully upgraded 10 times, which I usually do. So now I'm afraid that if I upgrade my stuff by the full 10 LVLs, the imp equipment boosts won't trigger. What have your experiences been with that helpful little rascal?

It's just RNG. It can level up your stuff at +10

Imp can bring EQ to +15. Honestly don't waste time trying to get it to happen. You're better off getting to higher NG+'s for better ILvl.

+15 is cool, not that it really matters at higher ilvl cause of linear value increase. And then just for some affixes.
I still unequip anything non +10 when Imp pops up, just not to waste the rare upgrade chance.
