I don't think there will be "thousands of people" who would write mods though - VR is relatively small, and so as a result of that, there's also way less people caring about it and skilled enough to write good mods for a game. I don't think mod support itself is really the hardest things - the hardest thing is attracting good modders to a game :)
What kind of mods would you like to be possible through such mod support?
I love the look and feel of cyube though. I'll have my oculus in a month or so and your game is first on my list man. Keep up the good work.
While there may still not be thousands willing to mod, there's easily hundreds. And it only really takes a few dedicated players to write game changing, time extending, amazing mods. Look at Pavlov and blade and sorcery for a good example of player made vr mods! From recreating cod zombie maps in Pavlov to lightsabers in B&S! The VR modding community is really starting to take off
You're game is in a good place right now, and I think nows the best time to implement modding. If you wait too long, another survival crafting game may come out, looking to overtake you and claim the "minecraft vr" staple for themselves. And if that happens, I think it'd be hard to compete with them then.
Also adding modding will let you see what the players want and like; a way to vastly expand your comprehension of your fan base and what they want to see added
You'll also almost guaranteed get more coverage from youtubers like Habie147, as well as from players talking up the game /certain mods. Which should then drive more modders to your game as well. Cuz really, one amazing in depth mod can make all the difference for a game. It starts others going "whoa look at what they did in this game, I wonder if I could do something cool too"
You could also see (tho I have no idea how it works) if you could get your game on the mod Nexus site, like where the fallout, skyrim, and etc mods tend to be. If your game were listed there, then modders all over would see it and know there's a moddable "minecraft" for VR
Lastly, you could use the players to develop aspects of your game for you. Since you're a one person team, you could use all the support you can get :o you can offer up contests like "design a monster. Best design with the most votes gets added to the game with credit toward the creator in game". Let us help and support :D
I can tell you your game is more fun to play in VR than minecraft vr or vivecraft. And beautiful as well. I'd hate to see Cyube fall by the wayside when something more basic, but moddable, comes out
Anyway, lots of ranting on my part sorry 😅I hope for the best for you and your game!
Hi! First, this thread thread is from 2018, when no modding support in cyubeVR existed. But now, in 2021, modding through the Steam Workshop does exist in the form of custom blocks that can very easily be created and shared with everyone. Take a look at the workshop here:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/619500/workshop/
There are over 250 custom blocks available in there already, so quite a lot :)
Now of course, that's "only" blocks, and not in-depth gameplay mods. But there actually is not much I can do to "add" in-depth modding to the game. cyubeVR is a game made with Unreal Engine 4, so modding it generally works exactly same as modding any other UE4 game. I as the developer of the game can't do much about making it easier, apart from happily supporting anyone who is interested in modding anything with any information they might need. If you are, come join the cyubeVR Discord and ask any question you might have in the #modding channel, I am definitely very happy to help anyone who wants to mod anything!
A UE4 game with a great modding community is "Satisfactory". The community there has created their own mod loaders etc that allow to mod basically everything in the game. The cyubeVR community could do the exact same thing! But it needs quite a lot of skill, so no one with the right skill has been interested in doing that yet for cyubeVR. Satisfactory is obviously a way more popular game than cyubeVR, so with a way bigger community, there automatically are more skilled modders.
If someone is interested in doing in-depth modding for cyubeVR, I would recommend trying to port the Satisfactory modding tools (which are open source) to cyubeVR, which should be possible with not too much work, since both are UE4 games. That would likely be a lot easier than building it all from scratch.
So I think there is not much "I" can do, we just have to hope that some skilled modders find their way into the cyubeVR community and start making some amazing in-depth mods :)
