Idk if you hadn't noticed, but the old SOS you knew is no longer. It is now a Battle Royale game. People who saw "SOS: Classic" bought it for what it is. Now the developers will halt developtment of that, and proceed with SOS: Battle Royale which is now their main game (which nobody asked for and why people are mad).

The devs decided to turn their game into another steryotipical BR. You can still play classic mode if you had the game bought (should be in your library and just needs to be downloaded), but pretty much the entire community is really PO'd at the devs for ignoring the community and turning a unique experience into another boring BR with nothing interesting but the flare guns to drop in supplies. Everything else is basically PUBG and fortnite

Unfortunately the answers, or at least the only two coherent ones so far, simply say that it's because it's become a free-for-all. Is that really the only reason?

It seems like they launched the game with a social game that you could talk to people and had to work together to do the objective. Which is exciting as it is not something that really has been done before.

Now it seems they turned it into a last man standing BR game. No voice chat or objectives other then be the last person alive. So it attracted an audience for a type of game and then just switched it to something completely different. Hence the hate.

Fortnite Save the world is still actively developed, every week it gets new items/updates alongside the Br sibling, very different to what happened here

You have no idea what you are talking about. Save the mode is not only still in it is still getting updates. This is in no way the same thing at all.....

We, as a community, are also pulling together for game-nights where the queue-times go down and everyone queues in solo in the Classic-client to play together :) So far it's Fridays, but we are hoping we can get some more days into the roster!
