I know games weren't as handholding as they are now. I'm gaming since the late '80s. :)
That's exactly the essence of the game and quests.
It can be quite unforgiving and maybe frustrating, this is a game that doesn't hold your hand.
Keep listening (really!) to what the NPCs have to say about quests, locations etc.
They will tell you (rough) directions, which is important to remember, they give you clues etc. but a lot of quests aren't straightforward and require some thinking, listening and exploring.
If you're really stuck, you can always try out a walkthrough, or ask for specific help.
There's a quest from the guy that sells Twon-Ha in Shamazaar, which involves getting a Twon-Ha to another guy.
There, you just need to equip the GUI he gave you, and the Twon-Ha (the one with rizi bags on it neer the daoka to Talanzaar) will follow you once you're close enough.
Regarding riding one:
Never did that so far, but as far as i remember, you also just have to equip the GUI, be near your Twon-Ha and then mount it from his left side.
Though i'm not 100% sure on that one.
