Multiplayers ?

Hello to all.

I've actually had this game for a few years now, but I must admit that I've put it on the back burner and hardly played it at all. I recently reinstalled it and... I really like it.
However, I don't understand the multiplayer combat system at all. How do you get an opponent? Is it online or asynchronous? Are there still players of this game online?

there are still people playing online on steam and on mobile and it is asynchronous with a small skill based match making system so that new players don't have to match up against 30th black belts more or less
