how do i invite a friend to multiplayer?

Ok so on the xbox version i can invtie friends in-game, but I cant do that here. Is there a way that I can do it using steam or do i just have to get lucky?

I have searched everywhere and can't find an answer to what I suspect is a very noob question! lol

I'm still gonna reply, even if it's been ages; Multiplayer, Online, Host, Start Game, Shift + Tab to open Steam Overlay and then invite a friend to your lobby
