Great question and thank you for having the courage to ask it straight up! Yes, it is correct that you can still access the game through more conventional (text-only) methods and we do not want to prohibit this in the future either. So yes, you can continue to access BatMUD with TinyFugue, Mudlet, Zmud or even plain telnet in the future, too.
The benefits of our game client is that it is graphically assisted. This especially for new player adaptation (but don't get us wrong, many, many experienced players play with our game client as their only method these days) and also for attracting players who would otherwise shun away from a crude text-only view.
What benefits the game client brings in general (listing some for reference):
+ character status window (graphical view of your hp/sp/ep, target and target health)
+ ability to split input into different windows (channels, movement)
+ realm map where your and your party members positions are shown, real-time, marker data
+ party status view/window (see your party members stats, e.g. health, positioning, conditions, drag and drop)
+ effects view(s) (what buffs/debuffs are affecting you, graphically, length of effect/timers)
+ area mapper (as a separately downloadable plugin)
+ BatMUD specific triggers and built-in trigger manager
+ ability to control e.g. movement over mouse (left-click on exits etc.)
to name some.
As a specific answer to your question, for Steam, in v1.100 (first release) we have made available Steam Cloud which allows ca. 947 MB of data stored in Steam's cloud, enabling you to have your configurations, triggers, map data, log files etc. and share them with any other Steam-enabled machines (across platforms) you may have (in other words, to play BatMUD on multiple machines, with your own settings, always saving.)
Hope this helps!
