Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

How reliable are this games mechanics?
I have a curious case of migration failure. I wanted to migrate Syrons into my dwarfen city because the city is on shadow ground and I want crops, but, I cannot migrate them in since I have no syrons in my empire, EXCEPT, I did precisely this on the same turn of another save file! I am allied to Oneron. so, it was my understanding, that this meant I could migrate Syrons in, and I started doing so, only to load the auto-save to avoid hiring a single wolf to save 15 gold plus upkeep for a total of 21, it mattered. But doing so has ruined my plans as now I cannot migrate them in. This game is very detailed, there are a great many interactions, like some races being happier on certain terrain and I think maybe zombies obey you always as long as you have someone watching them? Not sure about that one maybe they're just pushovers. My question is, am I missing something or did the game just glitch and if it did so, how likely is it to do so again when it comes to, other mechanics? Can I just end up with another race randomly because of an integer overflow? Like, how glitchy are we talking? And if it is a glitch, how do I stop it? Also on that note, obscure mechanics the game has a lot of them, Did you know strangle works on flying units? Is there a place, I can go, to know this stuff or do I just have to try everything to find out? On that note, there seems to be nothing else like this game, but am I mistaken? Are there other games that do what Age of wonders shadow magic does because too be frank, I do tire of my games, breaking on me. Wouldn't mind a more reliable way to experience the same thing. It just seems like no other game does what this game does, or at least not nearly as well. Can't make new settlements in total war games for example, no forts don't count.

I settled a city on the surface, now I can migrate in every allied race....What why? WHY?!
Is that a mechanic? HOW IS IT A MECHANIC? How do I know so much and yet so little about this game?!
I never played the game, even though, I installed it many times, and hence have no answer. It is just interesting, to read your post.

Hopefully someone still around, with a couple 100 or 1000 hours gameplay time, has an answer..

If your starting wizard is good, evil troops won't want to join you.....and vice versa. Neutral troops can be made to work with both. It's a balancing act. Too many of one alignment will upset another alignment.
If you start as an evil wizard, but you conquer a bunch of halflings, and don't replace them, you will eventually turn neutral and then good. Also ports increase income? Not sure how but they do, and you can get quests from multiple spirits by building 1 of each shrine Buuuuuut doing so will piss them off and you may not be offered quests from any of them after that. this games got a deep bag.
