better powers, better bonecharms and mechanics, better enemies and options, better overall story
the first game was revenge on corrupt government officials and much darker and depressing in a london-esq city where the poor all die or hide and only the rich thrive
the second game is out in a bright, sandy, port city with people at least somewhat thriving no matter who because they need laborers and is about beating/killing Delilah and rescuing your daughter/father
I don't think that the tropical setting helped D2 in any way, it was the average Ubisoft-ish formula to make things appeal nicer, bigger (and emptier) and demeanor somehow justified how you should merge with the new environment. I haven't played expansion yet, but I assume it's about the same, DEI included. First game has 97% rating while second one only 89% and expansion sits on 86% even.
