"Cross platform" play
I bought this game on PC via the Microsoft store when it came out. Now it's out on steam, and people I know are actually buying it can I play multiplayer from my Microsoft accounts with their steam accounts or do I have to buy it on Steam again?

That's a very interesting question indeed and my money is on "sure, why not?"
Allow me to elaborate even further....I wonder if the PC version's players and the XOne players can play multiplayer together...

I guess it's absolutely possible to expect the existence of such a function at least in regards of Microsoft's own system...I would be really surprised if the PC and XOne players WOULDN'T be able to play together online, at least in Mic's own system where you can buy both versions individually.

I mean, Rocket League does let the XOne and PC players play with each other and Classic
SW: Battlefront 2's servers are reachable from both the GoG and Steam versions...

Ehh, all in all the only answer I can give you is a strong maybe. xD

Well, according to the Microsoft Store's product page it DOES have cross-platform multiplayer available and I don't see why wouldn't that apply to this release as well considering the fact that it's pretty much the exact same thing, but with a slightly extended OS support slapped on top of it.

Thank you so much for your reply, that's really helpful! Now I just have to wait for the game to go on sale and convince people it's worth their while!

could be different tho, as I remember that COD IW MS store version couldn't play together with Steam version.

Has anybody managed to do this yet? I bought it when it realeased on the microsoft store, but now it's released here and my steam friends are buying it.
I'd love to play with them without having to buy the game again, but I can only seem to add x-box friends, and my steam friends can only add other steam players.
