Carpenter Bug

I'm playing Chrono Trigger on Steam, and I'm stuck on Frog's side quest. I got the tools to fix the bridge, but there's an issue with the carpenter in 600 AD.

When I first talk to him, instead of mentioning that he needs the tools, he just says, "Be careful with them" (or something similar) and ends the dialogue. Because of this, it seems like the initial trigger isn't working.

I went to 1000 AD, talked to the carpenter's wife, and got the tools, but when I return to 600 AD, I can't give them to the carpenter. He doesn't acknowledge that I have the tools, and I can't progress.

It feels like the problem is with the initial dialogue in 600 AD not activating the quest properly. Is there a way to fix this?

Are you sure you followed the quest right? You didn't miss anything? Go back and speak with the 1000 AD carpenter again after the wife gave you the tools just to be sure. The steam version is very wacky with quests. You might need to reload to another early point or get lucky with the save in a different time, quit game, reload and travel back.

These tools are for the Heros Grave (also known as Northern Ruins) by the way.

I'm sure everything is ok, but for some reason it causes this bug, I finished it without doing this side quest, I'll do it in the next run unfortunately, thanks for commenting :)
