How is the PC port these days?

I've heard a lot of negative things about this port over the years, but I also heard a lot of the issues got fixed in updates. I never played Chrono Trigger, and I've heard that the DS version is better, but would this version be fine for a first playthrough?

In controller mode, I played through and it is essentially the DS + PS1 + Mobile port with the best features of each. Has the animations from PS1, has the vortexes and 13th good ending from DS, and alternate input for button puzzles from mobile. The localization is supposedly the best one so far, without the "weird things" (out of place accent for Frog [no other knights talked that way]). I think it might be my favorite version?

Additionally, with a few mods from nexus, like the Pixel Demaster and a few other tweaks, the game is basically the ultimate version.

I also wanted to say I've played each version EXCEPT mobile at least 10 times through each, with the DS version a bunch more times than that. Probably like near to or over a 100 times total. I've gone through the Steam version during March 2024 3 times so far. I did NOT play it before then, so I cannot comment on what bad things got fixed.

IMO, this version is probably the most accessible version that you can get considering many of the other digital versions are no longer for sale (Wii VC), and physical copies are harder to find now. That being said, i feel like its still buggy. Ive had my version crash many times. On top of that, there is this weird bug where the music always restarts after battles rather than continue where it left off. Furthermore, I think a couple of the anime cut scenes are not in this version.

If i had to pick a version to go with, i prefer the DS version. It has the retranslation as well as all the extras, and I think its plays well, but I do know its harder to find physically now.

I believe the PS1 classic is still available on the PS3 eStore, but that version suffers from bad load times. Also some of the music isa bit different and it doesnt have the extras in the DS/Steam version.

Can give that a shot if you are missing the file, if you have intel integrated graphics AND a graphics card and you have the intergrated graphics shut off it won't even load.

I'm using an xbox one controller with a usb bluetooth adapter on my fairly powerful desktop pc and it's pretty good. The only real downside is some of the sounds aren't right, but most of them are right. The Steam version does lack the monster raising side game that the DS version has, but from what I hear it's quite an annoying grind fest. I beat the game got all the endings and beat the dimensional vortex and lost sanctum. There were some hard bosses at least in both of those, had to bust out the white/blue/red/black plates and mail a few times for sure to survive.

The SNES version is no port, but yes, I'd say this one might even be slightly better overall due to a few quality of life changes. I'd still pick the DS version over it I think.

The best version is still the DS version. Most feature complete, and less buggy. However it wouldn't look good on a large monitor or TV at high resolution. This version is the second best. Playable enough, and has a lot of the extras but also bugs, and the filter used to try to cover up it looking bad at higher resolutions only makes it look worse IMO.

I use Reshade to enhance the graphics with some retro feeling but sometimes when a new map is loading the game just crashes. Personally speaking it is still acceptable and worth trying.

What bugs are you referring to? Also, there's a mod called Depixelized that removes the filter and adjusts some of the sprites. Looks very good.
