I have had zero problems so far so its kinda mixed.
There is alot of crashing in this version, nothing mid fight. I've notice it randomly occurs when playing for long session like 3 - 5 hours and when entering a room, it crashes but when booting it back up it picks up from where it crashed, but to be safe save a lot !
Haven't finished this version yet either but based on reviews if you would like achievements you have to beat the game and watch the cut scenes after beating the game, to unlock them.
That all said, this version has several bugs that I personally feel make it unplayable, particularly the music bgm resetting after battle. Considering this was not the original SNES behaviour, it's something I just cannot stand whatsoever, especially given how excellent the soundtrack is for this game. The run button also frequently gets stuck, and apparently people experience frequent crashes, though I suspect that has to do with newer hardware than when this was released and last updated.
Given this is the 30th anniversary of the game, it would be nice if Squenix could fix the above bugs, and even better, release this to consoles as well, but I get the feeling like it will just continue to let it languish, as clearly nothing they do to this game will satisfy everyone, even though purists could just play the original game and let those of us who've also loved the game all along but wished it could be more to have something that suits our tastes as well.
Edit: I take that back, it's actually a lot more playable than I first thought, as you can use the classic UI layout for battles, so you only really need to swap screens for menu stuff. I can totally work with that. The only other issue then is that some sound effects and music instruments aren't quite the same as the SNES/PC version as I presume the DS sound chip is slightly different, but it's still better than having the bgm reset after battles and all the other weird bugs the PC version has.
Plus, if you are wanting to play the greatest JRPG ever made, I, personally, would want to duplicate the experience as best as possible by playing it on the original hardware on a CRT tv. But that's if you are the type to go the extra mile. By all means, the Steam version is still 97% great, but it's like the Star Wars trilogy; there are those who remember the Theatrical Cuts and can't ever warm up to the Special Editions.
One day I'll get to have my cake and eat it, too.
- An ugly yellow filter over the entire visuals
- reduced art detail due to crushed colours, due to the aforementioned yellow filter
- no decent visual setting, only a choice between harsh pixellation and the worst ugly filter even made
- they didn't bother properly recreating various visual effects in the Steam port, so mist
and some other things look comparatively bad
- A translation that is, IMO, far worse than the SNES'
- some incorrect sound effects
- bugs, like the screen being jittery when walking diagonally, or messy lines of pixels where there shouldn't be any
- the game crashes for many people, and it won't even launch for some
- inconsistent controller support (can't name characters with a controller)
- the tacked-on bonus content doesn't integrate with the base game, and is of extremely lower quality than the original game. Many people say that it makes the entire package worse - which I agree with.
Some of the issues can be fixed with modding, while others can't. But the Steam version is markedly worse than the SNES version.
1 PS1
2 SNES
3 PC
4 DS
Unless there's a patched version somewhere that I don't know of, the PS1 version and it's slow loading between battles is the worst version.
But it wasn't enough to run Chrono Trigger. The game lags sometimes on the overworld.
As for the actual game, it's not that bad, after all it's Chrono Trigger, and all the major bugs and glitches (like the mobile joystick that they just moved and forgot to remove it before release), however, they also added a notification pop-up every time you approach something that you can interact, and you can't disable it without mods.
