If you do go with the steam version change the graphics to original pixel art over the terrible default filter, and you may or may not have crashing issues or black screen.

I have had zero problems so far so its kinda mixed.

Since this ( and the DS version) have a new final scene that connects with Chrono Cross, this (or DS version) is better.

The text in the snes one is more enjoyable imo, but this version is just as good to play. If you wait for a sale you can pick it up for as low as 3 bucks but nothing beats free on the rom.

There is alot of crashing in this version, nothing mid fight. I've notice it randomly occurs when playing for long session like 3 - 5 hours and when entering a room, it crashes but when booting it back up it picks up from where it crashed, but to be safe save a lot !

Haven't finished this version yet either but based on reviews if you would like achievements you have to beat the game and watch the cut scenes after beating the game, to unlock them.
Personally, I find the script in this version to be much better than the original SNES release, as it is considerably more expanded and doesn't suffer from Nintendo censorship, and simply flows better overall as a result. The original English script, I find, is quite stilted and feels very much like a product of its time, trapped between translation and localization. Even Secret of Evermore's script flows better, despite being heavily cliched; at least it was originally written in English and benefits from that.

That all said, this version has several bugs that I personally feel make it unplayable, particularly the music bgm resetting after battle. Considering this was not the original SNES behaviour, it's something I just cannot stand whatsoever, especially given how excellent the soundtrack is for this game. The run button also frequently gets stuck, and apparently people experience frequent crashes, though I suspect that has to do with newer hardware than when this was released and last updated.

Given this is the 30th anniversary of the game, it would be nice if Squenix could fix the above bugs, and even better, release this to consoles as well, but I get the feeling like it will just continue to let it languish, as clearly nothing they do to this game will satisfy everyone, even though purists could just play the original game and let those of us who've also loved the game all along but wished it could be more to have something that suits our tastes as well.

Too bad there isn't a mod for it that makes it work with just the top screen or something, then it'd emulate really nicely. But as it is, it's basically unplayable emulated unless you have a really particular setup. Maybe it'll give me an excuse to use my 3DS...

Edit: I take that back, it's actually a lot more playable than I first thought, as you can use the classic UI layout for battles, so you only really need to swap screens for menu stuff. I can totally work with that. The only other issue then is that some sound effects and music instruments aren't quite the same as the SNES/PC version as I presume the DS sound chip is slightly different, but it's still better than having the bgm reset after battles and all the other weird bugs the PC version has.

u can find a secret room here where all the artists developers and other ppl who works on the game will speak a little text :D
Here's the thing. It's the SNES version. However, it's not nearly as accessible, legally speaking, as the Steam version. Every subsequent port, including this Steam version, has noticeable changes. Color changes, soundbite changes, translation changes, aspect ratio changes, font changes, overworld sprite changes and more.

Plus, if you are wanting to play the greatest JRPG ever made, I, personally, would want to duplicate the experience as best as possible by playing it on the original hardware on a CRT tv. But that's if you are the type to go the extra mile. By all means, the Steam version is still 97% great, but it's like the Star Wars trilogy; there are those who remember the Theatrical Cuts and can't ever warm up to the Special Editions.
Turns out that the Black Omen in the DS version of the game resets that very excellent background music in it after battles, unlike every other area in that version of the game leading up til then, much to my disappointment. That totally defeats my purpose in playing that version of the game, on top of the other minor issues it has, so I am back to hoping Squenix fixes the bugs in this version and releases a definitive edition of the game.

One day I'll get to have my cake and eat it, too.
No, the Steam version of CT is not better than the SNES version. It's significantly downgraded, and plagued with issues. Check out this comparison post to see the changes that were made to CT from one version to the next. You'll notice there's a large number of issues with the Steam version.

- An ugly yellow filter over the entire visuals
- reduced art detail due to crushed colours, due to the aforementioned yellow filter
- no decent visual setting, only a choice between harsh pixellation and the worst ugly filter even made
- they didn't bother properly recreating various visual effects in the Steam port, so mist
and some other things look comparatively bad
- A translation that is, IMO, far worse than the SNES'
- some incorrect sound effects
- bugs, like the screen being jittery when walking diagonally, or messy lines of pixels where there shouldn't be any
- the game crashes for many people, and it won't even launch for some
- inconsistent controller support (can't name characters with a controller)
- the tacked-on bonus content doesn't integrate with the base game, and is of extremely lower quality than the original game. Many people say that it makes the entire package worse - which I agree with.

Some of the issues can be fixed with modding, while others can't. But the Steam version is markedly worse than the SNES version.

Unless there's a patched version somewhere that I don't know of, the PS1 version and it's slow loading between battles is the worst version.

I once had a potato computer - 1.35 Dual Core without GPU. Even still, it was way better than a SNES, I think.
But it wasn't enough to run Chrono Trigger. The game lags sometimes on the overworld.

As for the actual game, it's not that bad, after all it's Chrono Trigger, and all the major bugs and glitches (like the mobile joystick that they just moved and forgot to remove it before release), however, they also added a notification pop-up every time you approach something that you can interact, and you can't disable it without mods. :beatmeat:
