The graphics also look better on other platforms, using a bilinear filter, when available. The image wasn't designed to be pixel-perfect, as CRT TVs had their own blurring effect that made things appear smoother. But the filter option graphics in Steam CT also look nothing like a CRT TV, and they look hideous. CT looks much better played on a CRT or on another platform that provides a decent filter (I like just a simple bilinear filter and think it's the most accurate to a CRT).
It's too bad the Steam version doesn't have the original SNES translation or a decent graphics filter. The Steam version is a very lackluster and sloppy release.
Yeah I noticed that too about the translation. The NPCs have less character with the new translations since the DS version, and the game loses a lot of its charm.
If you're 30 you should be aware of the graphics. It was like this even when I was a kid, and I'm 10 years younger!
It's unfortunate the Steam version doesn't have the best translation and it DOES keep crashing but that's on Steam. The story's still good.
Playing something for the first time that is 27 years old and not liking it is pretty normal. It more or less seems like you are just asking for a fight by the third post. I can't stand Chrono Cross and people absolutely love it. Each their own.
Move on. This version of this game is a pretty bad port.
The SNES translation of Chrono Trigger is definitely better than the NDS version which gutted all the character and charm from the characters and dialogue. Additionally, the NDS translation of CT is extremely clunky and jarring, and all the characters speak as if they're the same personality, whereas in the SNES translation, they all have clear unique personalities. There's far more emotional intelligence in the SNES version of CT, which is much more coherent and vibrant in general.
The censorship in the original CT was extremely, extremely minimal and not in the least concerning anything that mattered ("cider" instead of "beer"... OK). There's nothing in the NDS version of CT that is risky. But there's a huge amount of charisma that's loss My impression is that you haven't played the SNES version of CT. Because, if you had, you'd know how not-reflective-of-reality your argument is.
You aren't speaking for this fan or many others. There's nothing anti-Japanese about having an English translation that is actually coherent English and not wonky, sterile, and stilted phrasing that can't be called fluid or skillful English.
There's nothing about the SNES translation that is nostalgia. It's just more intelligent, clever, and emotionally rich. Plus, the fact that each character in the SNES version talks like their own character, rather than just like all the other characters, does a lot to convey the impression that they are actually different characters.
I recommend you play the SNES version so that you'll know what you've been missing out on. I think that you just don't know that what you've played, the NDS version, is bad.
Ted Woolsey changed things under his time constraints, sometimes he'd make a bad choice. A good example is wind slash being just called slash in the original Ted Woodsey version. In the game, NPCs tell you about how wind can cancel out the whirlwinds in town, when you fight the boss and the fiend children say they're the wind, you're supposed to remember this so you can use Wind Slash to cancel them out, but with "Slash" as a move it doesn't make much sense
The change of Grandleon/Grand-Dream to Masamune....is just strange even for Ted Woolsey. Its bizarre beyond belief, does the opposite of the Americanizing hes known for, and has caused a lot of nonsensical errors in the future translations.
Frog is the only one in 600 AD to talk like that, its very weird that people find this charming
