xbox 360 controller works great for me ps4 should work

Any controller works if you use steam's innate controller support.

Xbox should be supported by default on windows.

PS4 is a bit more tricky - http://ds4windows.com/ will be great help with PS4 controllers. Be warned, this site is NOT verified.

This game natively supports: XBox One, 8Bitdo Snes, and Dual Shock 4 Controllers. I've tested all three.

Do you guys get the diagonals to work?? feels super weird to have only kardinal directions

That is something more related to how the game was coded.

If you change the Dpad or Joystick to "Joystick Move" in steams controller configurator it will give you diagonal control
