How to get past Spekkio?

I never had this much trouble in the DS version, but for some reason this guy is impossible right now. I'm using a controller to play, but even using other control schemes he seems even more anal then I remember.

Spekkio has always had iffy detection. Hug the walls and make sure you are going the correct direction (I stupidly misread the text and was trying to walk counter-clockwise... oops!).

The biggest problem tends to be the door, since if you hug the walls you will get stuck in the doorway, but if you walk too far away from the door Spekkio will thing you messed up. Be careful and tap the controls and you'll get it eventually.
