Swallow sword for Crono or Guardian (Safe) Helm?

When you play through the game the first time, which item do you chose? Do you get the best weapon you can at that point in the game, or do you go defensive with one of the best helm the game offers?

With the sword, you double Crono's attack power, so couple it with a Rage Band or a Power Ring, and his attacks are beyond deadly for this point. Also, throw some Speed Capsules at him to max out his speed in his low 30s and he will chew through just about anything. Don't forget to look at his techs Cleave and Frenzy to capitalize on his attack power and the Swallow.

With the helm, for providing straight up defense, it is the 4th best in the game so to get it as early as you can is no skin off of anybody's nose. It also comes with the added bonus of Auto-Protect, which reduces ALL physical damage by 1/3 before its amazing defense get calculated. Plus, with the ability being Auto, every fight, the entire fight, you will have its protection.

I typically go the sword route. I like chewing through enemies quick. I ALWAYS get Nadia at the beginning of the game, go into the forest, and grind kills until I have enough for a Silver Sword (4000 G) at Melchior's shop there in Leene's Square. Plus, during this time you can get the Blue, Black, and White Plates defensive armors, you can get an Aeonian Suit and Helm, and have some other really good defensive items. There are indeed better but I feel there is enough options that grabbing the helm is just a little redundant. Its nice to pump out damage when I need to or just plain want to.

you make arguments like they are detrimental, but honestly, just choose the helm first. more people utilize it, but both get outpaced rather quickly pending on the order you do events later, but the helm gives more usability. you get both overtime as you do more playthroughs if you're worried about collection sake, but really if you plan on using them for any amount of time, the helms we do better than chrono's sword.

I agree with your points about the items, not your comment about my arguments being detrimental. The helm is the better choice for longevity as well as versatility on who all can wear the helm. I just always lean towards the sword, control the fight by killing quickly, and keep my defense, magic defense, and health high while healing as needed.

Always the sword, always. You can steal the helm later but that is the only chance for the sword. Also the sword gives +3 to speed so you only need 1 speed tab for crono to hit ** speed. The sword makes falcon hit (crono + ayla) really powerful for where you are in the game when it becomes available. Get it ASAP. Obviously it falls off and you will change it later but its too good not to get.
