Confused about the state of the game
Hello,

I have always wanted to try this game but since I've never owned it (nor a console to play it on), I'm left only with the option to get this one.

I'm getting mixed messages about this port though. The Steam reviews seem to suggest the game has been fixed since it's infamous launch, but the forums are filled with rants and complaints about missing content.

So, if I understand it correctly, this version is currently missing two FMVs, some extra content (can't find what) and HUD customisation options.

Is that it? Shall I pick this up while it's on sale and wait for patches or is the game finished here?

Emulation is not an option. I don't have enough money to buy an old cartridge (old physical media are considered collector's items and priced accordingly) and I don't know anyone who has it (I highly doubt I know anyone who even ever had a SNES or NDS). Also, it's probably obvious that I refuse to pirate.

So, is the missing content really that bad? And could it still get patched in? The changelogs seem to imply the updating is done.

Also, the game's super cheap now, so normally there would be no reason not to pick it up. But my backlog is getting pretty big and I want to know if this is worth investing time and finances in. After all, for many, this is the "best game ever made". Of course I'm curious.

I’m curious if the fixes to this port are good as well. I was also hesitant.

Played the snes version. Still arguably my favorite game of all time. Willing to buy again if it is reasonable.

Also curious if they fixed the actions you can take at the carnival in the beginning (without being spoilery since OP hasn’t played). I read that was a big negative last I checked.

This is a decent port. Not great, just decent.

It's based on the DS port, with the anime cutscenes and the extra stuff, but lacks the bestiary and has two cutscenes missing for some unknown reason.

Works well for most people, has controller support, but also works with mouse+keyboard.

Is it better than an emulated version? Nope. But it's still a decent port for those that don't want to use emulators (I don't like DS emulation, for eample, yet I wanna play the version with the DS content and translation).

Did they fix fonts? It seems that Japanese version has still mobile fonts (based on youtube, but someone might played before updates...)

The English fonts are fixed. I don't know about the other fonts, but I think not, as I read someone complaining that Asian fonts still look like ass.

I just purchased the game as it was on sale. Played about an hour. Issues I'm facing:
* The movement is sometimes very sluggish.
* There doesn't seem to be an exit button to quit the game.
* Shop doesn't show how much money you have left:

:( I always wanted to play in Japanese, for some reason I never did despite all 16bit FF and some other minor jrpgs like Lufia 2. Maybe I was already tired of pixelated Japanese fonts.

Very well then, thank you all. I'll probably get this since it's discounted and I'm curious. I'll wait for a while to see if it's finished and if it is, I'll just watch the cutscenes elsewhere, then. The bestiary sounds like a great feature, though. Is it the only other thing missing?

Also, thank you for being sensitive and not spoiling. I appreciate that.

WOW, just WOW. After so many patches they're still issues like that. Standing ovation for SE.

Don't worry about the missing anime cutscenes though. They aren't exctly important, more like eye-candy.

What happens on the anime cutscenes happen again in in-game graphics too. In fact, some people dislike the cutcenes because they are redundant. They are not in the original game, and were added as "extras" on the PS1 port. I like them, don't get m wrong. But they aren't important.

The bestiary was a neat feature on the DS version though. It's a shame it's missiong, but it's not that big of a deal.

Actually, theres another option: getting the ps1 version (which has a few other problems like lag) and run in through an emulator (to use it legally you would need to own also a consle in order to use legal bios files). This is one of the greatest games designed ever, and i think is insulting the lack of care this and many previous "ports" show.

anyway, imo, thats the best option to run many classic games: there are great and free emulators, almost bug free, without spam or adware, and most importantly: will all kinds of options to render the games and control framerate (so problems like lag are almost invisible). the legal issues with emulators and roms depend entirely if you own or not a legal copy of the game (and in the case of the ps1 and ps2, a console) to run a game.

this video explains the current state of the game. Even if its on sale, i wouldnt support it since many bugs and design problems are still present.

Do you have a controller to try? I heard of this lag for people playing on keyboard and mouse but I had no trouble with my controller. For the exit button, I think it's somewhere in the settings/options menu but It's been a bit since I played the game. For the money count I heard it's related to Windows regional settings or something, I'm not sure if there's a fix.

Yes I played wirelessly with Steam Link. PS4 controller and with Big Picture Mode. The combination has worked fine with Yakuza 0 before. It's not horrible occassional lag, but noticeable. While you asked this quesion I also tried with wired PS3 controller with SCP toolkit. That results to 10 fps... When I played with PS4 controller and Steam Link, I hadn't SCP toolkit running because primarily it would have used PS3 controller (game doesn't seem to support multiple controllers plugged at the same time).

The Market in question which doesn't show how much money is remaining is in 600AD. Might not be an issue in other markets, but cannot verify at the moment.

I see there is a bookmark option (only when not in world map) to quick save and exit. That's a neat feature. There is no option to quit without saving, though, except ALT+F4.

The content that's missing shouldn't stop you from enjoying the game at all. Since were talking about a Monster fighting side minigame from the NDS version that has nothing to do with the maingame.(Though it did have a few accessories exclusive to it) And two FMV's you can watch on Youtube. It would be nice to have those patched in but it's hardly worth not buying the game for.

The small bugs in the port are more annoying but none of them are a huge deal aside maybe from the store glitch but I played through the whole game, and never saw that.
I've seen mixed reports about the bugged Save Points. Have these been fixed, or are they still solid objects, & therefore useless in certain areas?
