I usually go with Crono/Frog/Robo just because they're my favorite characters but so long as you have some adequate heals it's doable no matter who you choose excluding maybe a Magus/Lucca combo.
A strategy i usually use is to keep 1 character dedicated exclusively to healing and item use while the other 2 fight, any team is viable imo but for a vanilla run i'd recommend to bring Marle and Chrono, mainly because they're the only ones who learn rezz techniques, Marle while squishy AF has some of the best healing techs of the game and Chrono has very good physical and magic damage
As for the third member id go Robo for sheer sturdiness, decent damage and AoE heals; Frog might not be as resistant but has better heals and good dmg too; or if you wanna test your luck try Lucca for huge AoE magic attacks and random dmg spikes from her Wondershot
Finally, if you wish to get extra Prism gear beyond the ones Bosch aka Melchior gives you on his sidequest and BEFORE going to NG+ you can try stealing them from the Queen's final form at the Black Omen, use Ayla's tech on the hands till you get them, actually, try stealing from EVERYONE at Black Omen, you'll be surprised by the stuff you can get this way
Levels?
Techs aren't dependent on XP but tech points awarded at the end of each fight, all characters gain a bit of xp regardless if they're currently on the party or not; if you need to learn a specific tech you might need to grind a bit; you can check your progress till next tech on the tech menu anytime
Or if you're asking for recommended level to take on Lavos, based on your original post it's perfectly possible with your characters at 50+, Lavos being the Final boss will always hit hard regardless of gear; but if you still wish to gain a few levels id say 60+ is a bit more comfortable
This is what I used. I don't know what the items and techs are called in the Steam version, so I'll just use the original SNES names. I used a team of Lucca, Magus and Robo, with everyone equipped with Prism Helmets (I prefer having 3 characters defended from status ailments to 1 character with reduced elemental damage). Lucca and Magus had Gold Studs to lower their MP consumption, and Robo had Blue Rock to enable the Omega Flare triple tech. First have Lucca cast Protect on at least herself, and Magus cast Magic Wall on at least Robo (preferably cast Protect and Magic Wall on everyone). Then spam Omega Flare, healing occasionally with Robo's Heal Beam (or Megalixirs if you're badly hurt or running out of MP). If Robo is busy healing, you can also simply use Flare and Dark Matter.
Against the last form with the body, left bit and right bit, use physical attacks and Robo's Uzzi Punch to kill the left bit, and when the right bit shuts off core defences, keep using Omega Flare. Alternatively, if Robo is your 3rd character (located next to the right bit), you can use the Doublev Bomb double tech to damage the right bit. When the right bit restores defences, repeat the strategy. The right bit should go down after a few repetitions.
Unfortunately, Magus is an issue, I haven't used him in the team, So all he knows is his default second level element spells
I use epoch to punch a hole in him and already inside
