ReShade Settings Redone Using ReShade 3.1.2
First download ReShade https://reshade.me/
Run the exe point to Chrono Trigger.exe OpenGL

Pick your shaders, I don't recommend installing the whole list as it may likely slow down the game's startup, I just used Clarity, GaussianBlur, HQ4X, & Sepia (Tint)

Run the game then hit Shift+F2 create your setup it will be an ini, there will also be an opengl32.ini, we will get to that later.

Check which methods you want and close the OSD and exit the game, now modify whatever you named your config ini as I have here:

Effects=GaussianBlur.fx,Clarity.fx,HQ4X.fx,Sepia.fx
Techniques=Clarity,GaussianBlur,HQ4X,Tint
TechniqueSorting=Clarity,GaussianBlur,HQ4X,Tint

[Clarity.fx]
ClarityRadius=3
ClarityBlendMode=2
ClarityDarkIntensity=0.400000
ClarityOffset=2.000000
ClarityBlendIfDark=50
ClarityBlendIfLight=205
ClarityStrength=0.400000
ClarityViewMask=0
ClarityViewBlendIfMask=0
ClarityLightIntensity=0.000000

[GaussianBlur.fx]
GaussianBlurRadius=1
GaussianBlurOffset=1.000000
GaussianBlurStrength=0.250000

[HQ4X.fx]
s=1.000000
k=-1.100000
mx=1.100000
max_w=0.750000
min_w=0.030000
lum_add=0.350000

[Sepia.fx]
Tint=0.392157,0.392157,0.431373
Strength=1.000000

Now some more bits:

Where Effects, Techniques, and TechniqueSorting are there should not be anything that says key=, this means you enabled toggle on individual effects. I will show you how to setup F11 as your toggle.

Hiding the OSD when you have finalized your permanent settings oh and also it's reversible, so don't worry.

in opengl32.ini
[STYLE]
Alpha=0.000001
to hide the OSD

Alpha=1.000001 for easy restore, then you can just change the first 1 back to 0 to hide again.

F11 for toggle:
in opengl32.ini
[INPUT]
KeyMenu=113,0,1
InputProcessing=2
KeyScreenshot=44,0,0
KeyEffects=122,0,0

The KeyEffects value sets F11 as toggle.

Don't forget Configuration mode is for changes and Performance mode when you're all set.
Don't forget to set Performance mode before you hide OSD and keep permanent changes!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT EVERYONE USE THE DEFILTER MOD

So much better without the yellow shade. What in the world were they thinking?!

Now we are talking. I don't own the game yet, but ReShade may do the trick for me. Now I only hope the team fix the font, the missing cutscenes and include the HD versions of them into the game.

Thanks a lot! :closetgamer:

Can reshade do anything for wonky tiling issues? Maybe gaussian blur . . ?
Sirbagsalot Mar 4, 2018 @ 2:37pm
ugh the tiles though...they dont even align right...

Try experimenting if you'd like, I dunno.

Nice work. I personally like the clarity, and sepia settings. However I didn't like what FXAA, and HQ4X effects on the fonts when combined with the defilter patch. It made some of the text difficult to read so I left those effects off.

Yes the blur effects can fix the tile issue, but then you run into other visual issues when doing so. Namely it causes the sprites, and font to look worse. That is why I'm still using the CRT filter to fix the tile issue. Plus the original SNES version has the exact same tile issue, but it was never noticed back then because CRT TVs had a natural blending effect.

This looks really good.
I like this look of Clarity + Sepia fix, but I was also considering adding a CRT filter without FXAA, but when messing with CRT, I get a shimmering effect on the ground when moving. Very evident in the castle near the beginning. Is that unavoidable or can I use additional filters/settings to fix that?

I am not sure, I would keep trying settings, maybe disable clarity see if that is the culprit. Good Luck!

Yeah with raw pixels you will get some shimmering and what not too in places. A proper CRT filter in Retroarch fixes most issues I see. I don't think you have too many options for that CRT filter in Reshade. Not sure haven't kept up.
