The 2004 Remake Square-Enix shut down
Never forget that they shut down a proper remake that was making headway

https://youtu.be/VrlPnT89J-s

So they could wow us all with an official blur filter mobile port 14 years later.

lol yea I can't defend this port as much as I want but no matter what I can't ever defend a company shutting down fan projects that earn NO money whatsoever. Money grubbing arseholes...

Well it is their IP and they have the right to protect it if they wish to and C&D fan protects.

Given the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they've done with the property it would've been better to buy these guys and have them finish it.

That "remake" looked horrible. Especially since Resident Evil had just come out 2 years prior.

Chrono Trigger Resurrection was looking so promising. It's a tragedy that the dev team shut the project down. The redone musical score for the game was completed and is available for download. It's an excellent job of redoing the OST with higher quality instruments.

The people who created Chrono Trigger are no longer at Square-Enix. So, calling it "their" IP feels a bit... off. There's a different between legally can, and ethically are justified in doing.

Also, whether a publisher can successfully legally act against a free fan project like this is somewhat unproven. Usually, the developer just folds when threatened. But, to what extend law will actually prevent somebody from creating a free mod using popular IP as its theme doesn't have much history to reference.

He's talking about the remake which is a AAA budget completed game compared to a WIP fan project that despite getting shut down in 2004 only looks slightly worse than the 2018 official Secret of Mana remake. It looks great and if SE did a CT remake with the same visual style but modern shadow and lighting tech fanboys would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buckets.

And don't forget Crimson Echoes either.

That was just a ROMhack though, nowhere near the same level.

The completed form of that project is called Flames of Eternity.

If you don't enforce your trademark you risk losing it, that's why so many fan projects get shut down all the time. Depending on the country copyright laws allow more or less, for example private servers are legal in some places and not in others.

The best move a company can do is take a fan work and publish it as their own, like SEGA has been doing more recently for Sonic. But most Sonic games are simple, there's not a lot of context behind their stories. The same is not true for Chrono.

On top of that, there are more than one owner of a game typically. Composers generally retain rights over their work, as do some artists. Modern games also often use engines which have particular usage clauses that need to be considered. All this weights in on the ability of a company to even allow fan games or modifications to be made. You can't really have a Chrono game that's not vetted by Masato Kato for example.

As much as we all wish for a proper remake or another sequel, it's unlikely to happen without the involvement of the original team, or at least the key members like Kato and Mitsuda.

They've released together a time travel game last year, by the way, but Japan-only. I wonder if it's any good. But it's a free mobile game with a cash shop so I can already guess what kind of welcome it would get on Steam.

Pretty sure that's trademark, not copyright.

Whoops. Yes, that's what I meant. I'll edit. :-)

If I remember right they were never planning to make a full remake, just a bunch of scenes. They never delivered and then claimed they got a C&D. Seemed more like a publicity stunt than a real attempt.
