Sliding doors & walls
I feel so stupid right now, I'm working on the House that burned down, the sliding doors were broken, and it didnt give me an option to replace, so I sold them thinking I could just replace them, but the walls filled in, how do you put doors back in? :(

Believe me, you are NOT stupid.
I had the same thing happen to me, and what you think are sliding doors? THEY ARE ACTUALLY WINDOWS! And to place them? Just find the appropriate window, and place it where the "wall" is... and it will pop into place.
I would never have discovered the solution had I not put the same question you asked in discussions and a kind person gave me the solution! So, I'm just passing it on.

I don't know why the developers did that... it certainly confused the majority of us.
Hope that helps!

They are actually windows. You can find replacement windows in the window section. When you choose the ones that you want and buy them, a blue area will appear on the wall to help you choose where to place them. Then, when you click your mouse, a hammer will appear in your hand. You'll hit the wall with the hammer and then choose "E" to place the windows. The wall appearing is how the game is set up for replacing windows. By the wall appearing, it gives us the option to move them to different areas on the wall. A lot of people have gotten confused on this specifically with the "doors" that you are talking about. Many of us think of them as sliding glass doors, but the game considers them windows.

P.S. MizMeow1 is correct... sorry, I forgot about the hammer. Their description is correct on what to do with the hammer. (I forgot about using it for that particular purpose).
It is normal for the wall to close up when removing a window. If you put in a new window, it will place on the solid wall. It will look filled in at first. You hit it with the hammer, and it will knock the hole back out in the wall. And then you can place the new window.

Thanks, shadowdancer7911. Just so you know, when I started writing my comment, your comment had not appeared yet. You are right about this confusing so many people. You said that you didn't know why the Devs listed them as windows instead of doors. I'm not positive, but my guess is that it is a cultural thing. I know that I think of them as doors, but they may be considered windows where the Devs are from (which I cannot remember off hand at the moment). I think that is why we sometimes come across things in the store with names that we're not familiar with or seem just a bit off. Anyway, that's just my guess.

Thank you MisMeow1! If it hadn't been for you, poor Jennequick would be wondering about the hammer! Thank goodness we players not only help each other, but keep each other straight about our answers! And I do believe you are right... it very well could be just a cultural thing... we say to-mae-toe, and they say to-ma-toe ! LOL And it's ALL GOOD, no matter what!

Thank you both so much!.. I was so gutted, I just started playing and wanted to move my office and fell in love with the layout of the house (reminds me of living in south florida). I got the door on the back and top bedroom. hugs all around!! xx

Sometimes the devs just employ certain game mechanics for reasons that are opaque to users. It's cultural, but not ethnic (in Poland sliding doors are not viewed as windows) -- game devs have a different focus than gamers.

I think one problem in that difference of focus is that there are attributes to all items that the devs know but that are hidden from us. Like there are sofas that are defined as beds and instantly make a living room into a bedroom, and there are items that count as kid stuff under the hood and have the child hating buyers complaining, and that's the only way we can find out that they're defined as kid stuff because those things are not always represented in the item's name. If they just exposed those attributes, we would have a lot less confusion -- Workshop items do that, and it is so helpful in selecting, say, Modern and Expensive items when preparing a house for a specific buyer. In the Workshop you can even search by those attributes -- that functionality should really be part of the game.

I kinda like this window-door thing because that means I can change the location of such a "door" to some degree. Basically the easy way you can tell the difference between an external door and a window masquerading as a door is that when you sell an actual door, you have an empty opening, while if you sell a door that's really a window, you get the wall closing up. From what I have seen in the promo trailer for the Pets DLC that will change when we get to change the location of outside doors (yay), but for now it's a useful indicator.
