Samartha Myers house is cursed. The curse can be removed by digging up the coffin in the garden. If you do it before entering the house, there will be no scary stuff (unless you get spooked by the changing facial expression of the mask on the wall). The macabre paintings in the basement are quite mellow.
The devs haven't implemented a way to lift the curse in the Castle yet. However, apart from not having enough light, it isn't any more frightening than Disney's "Snow White".
The Apocalypse DLC is ok too - the guns are not functional, only there for wall decoration. And day 0 never comes. Kids may not like how drab and boring that DLC is to look at, but that's another matter entirely :)
Edit: Cockroaches and moles (in the Garden DLC) are a lot creepier, IMO. But the moles can be turned off in the options (you only need one for an achievement), and so can cockroaches.
