Always make sure that you have your own home and upgrade to better beds in order to get the well rested and healthy mind buffs. Healthy mind seems to give you triple learning rate.
Once you made it to Geneat class you can have a large number of properties. Then it depends on the map you play on and the situation of the village you live in. I think it is wise to find your niche and focus on businesses which produce goods not already on the market or in low supply. You need a market for your products and stable access to resources needed. Competing against another business of same type tends to decrease prices.
