Hey Maximus!

Not in the current beta, but it will become an option later on. We're working on male models and basic visual customization.

As for names our backers have earned rewards enabling them to add names to the randomized hero name pool, and at least for the time being during beta, names will be drawn from there.

Just checking back! How much character customization is there currently in the latest build? Are we now able to rename our characters, select gender, etc? I read the words, "X-Com and HOMM." I'm pretty excited.

Also, how flexible is Skirmish mode? Can we create and customize our own characters before each mission like in X-Com?

Also, can we expect a lot of variety in creatures/things to fight?

HI @Frozen Esper, and welcome back!

You can rename your characters, and change their colors. You cannot at the moment change gender of heroes, but you have both male and female heroes available for purchase at your towns. You can also purchase Goblin\Skeleton\Troll heroes based on your faction. We can add the ability to change gender of existing heroes, but for me personally it feels like it'll break immersion. I'm not really against it though, so we may add this feature based on feedback.

Skirmish mode does not refer to playing a custom single mission, but rather a custom single worldmap.

Around the end of 2018, based on feedback we got, we've started a complete rehaul of the strategic layer of the game, making it actually strategic instead of being a hybrid of both strategy and exploration, as we saw that it left players confused as to what is their goal. Skirmish mode is part of that overhaul.

The way the strategic layer works now is that you have your own base (a town), where you can purchase heroes, creatures, buildings and upgrades. You're also no longer limited to one party. Your goal is to fight against other factions (each of which has its own towns). Basically, the strategic layer is now much more close to HoMM than it was.

Due to these changes, your starting party of heroes is not as pivotal as it was before, so I'm not sure about adding a menu for configuring them before you start a game. If we do add the ability to change gender of existing heroes it also won't be really necessary.

As to the variety of creatures, we've added many new creatures and changed all existing ones quite considerably. At the moment there are 20 different creatures you can play with or fight against (though some of which are still a work in progress). There's also a controllable Ballista :)

Just wanted to add a vote that I'd love to see the ability to switch hero genders.

Thanks for the information. It sounds like the game is coming a long nicely.
