The "familiar painting" (SPOILERS AHEAD (Including for Scriptwelder's "DEEP SLEEP" games))

OKAY. So I just remembered the "Deep Sleep" games existed and I decided to play those without spoilers; needless to say I was stunned of several correlations between them and this game.

One of the correlations that struck me that I couldn't find being discussed was the "familiar painting" of some kind of animal out in the snow. Is this just a joke by Scriptwelder? Possibly forshadowing for another game? What are your thoughts?
