How to make foliage and edges not look terrible?
So for the most part everything in game looks pretty crisp and similar to skyrim SE. However things like foliage (all trees & greenery) and some specific hairs and furs just look terrible. Super fuzzy, & blurrish. Any ideas on what settings I need to change to make them look normal/sharp? I've included some photos even though photos don't do the issue full justice. Its really bad from a video perspective as it just looks like the trees themselves are alive and fuzzing around.

Is this Vanilla? (the street beeing flat, these rock textures and the trees make me think so)
Peppermint May 16, 2024 @ 12:17pm
That's vanilla and that's actually looking pretty good. But what we see on the screenshot from the window on the Monitor is NOT what you see in the VR headset.

Try turning OFF Temporal Antialiasing. In Steam VR settings check that super sampling is on and set the render resolution to about 150% ( but I think those are standard settings ).

The thing with VR sets though are that you're always close to the screen and you get to see the individual pixels and everything looks quite soft.
So my game isn vanilla it's actually heavily modded it's essentially running all the mods from my skyrim se modding guide minus mods that I could not get working on vr (power of 3 tweaks and anything that requires it) and I do have taa off I generally keep that off I do not like what it does to graphics. I'll have to check but my ♥♥♥♥ might even be at 300% I think I do have SS off. Not a fan of SS but I might turn it on if it does help with this foliage. It's killing my immersion.

TAA is crap.
If you have an NVIDIA card 2xxx or newer, I suggest to replace it with DLAA (Deep Learning AntiAlsiasing.)

Its the only way to complerely get rid of any foliage shimmer all together. Nothing else does.

100% stabile image. (TAA has still shimmering grass and trees).

But DLAA is as blurry as TAA and needs a sharpener on top. the mod that gives us DLAA has a sharpener on board. I use that one and another sharpener on top of it: the one in Glamour reshade.

Another problem might be, of you are using a Quest headset.
These send a COMPRESSED Video stream to the headset. Even if you use cable.
Thats ok in a game with very clean graphics, but SkyrimVR graphics are very noisy. Specially the foliage has a lot of noise.

That compression fails at noise, wich results in very muddy foliage on Quest headsets. (I have seen SkyrimVR on Vive, Index and Quest 3 myself. And while the resolution of the Quest 3 is the best of these, the compression artefacts in the Quest 3, even with the supposedly best possible settings on cable, look horrible compared to uncompressed video in Vive or Index.

And, like Peppermint said, because you are so close to the image (or the image is so big), the relative resolution is bad.

Relative resolution is usualy described as ppd = pixel per degree

The pixel per degree on a Quest 3 is comparable to playing 720p on a monitor. Wich is rather good already as the first generation of headsets has a ppd that was comparable to 360p on a monitor. Just that these 720p of it look like compessed youtube video if the source image is noise of folliage. ;-)

Stuff lile Pimax Crystal almost reach the ppd of playing 1080p on a monitor, but supposedly with chromatic aberation because of bad lenses and.... not even a RTX 4090 is fast enough for a resolution that high.

EDIT: maybe also get rid of these vanilla looking trees. That folliage hurts my eyes even on the screenshot. ;-D

I am using a HTC Vive pro 2 wont catch me using Meta hardware lol. And the trees aren't vanilla. I'm using SMIM, HPP, & skyrim 2018 w 202x. I guess they just look like ♥♥♥♥ due to the distance. But yeah I'll play around with the settings again I suppose till I find a healthy medium.

I hope you also got the VR mods for SkyrimVR. ;-)
Like VRIK, HIGGS, PLANCK, Spell Wheel and and and?

This game has 2 problem zones:

1. It looks dated. Solution: graphic mods
2. the motion controller support is laughable bad. Solution: Said mods from above.

I currently use "Fabled Forrests" as tree mod.

Here are some recent screenshots of my current modlist (wich changes every couple days LOL):

EDIT: the images apear blurry at the edges, because I use a fixed foveated rendering tool (full resolution in screen center and lower resolution towards the edges of the lenses) to save performance.

Hard to check stuff, because its a picture instead of text (not searchable).

So you could need, on the VR side of things:

Spell Wheel (graphical user interface to chose spells, food, weapons etc from)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/47630

VR Menue Mouse Fix (be able to aim on the menue with your controllers)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/33414

Weapon Throw VR (all melee weapons become throwable weapons that return like Thors hammer):
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/31374

Sprint Jump VR: (be able to jump out of a sprint)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/28354

Physical weapon parry VR (be able to parry enemy swings by coliding their weapon and your weapon during their swings)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/100781

Magic improvements for VR: (propper dual casting)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/55751

Instant Equip VR (less lag when using VRIK Holsters to pull or sheat a weapon)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/44571

Dual wield block VR (block with weapons in both hands (vanilla a weapon in side hand does not block). Also block with the backside of your fists (if you are boxing maybe) and block with a spell in hand.)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/28456

if you are NOT using Community shaders (Community shaders comes with its own solution for this):
Cubemap reflections (water reflections in VR)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/103077

also maybe:
Crouch to dodge VR (avoid a swing by crouching physically. sportive LOL)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/44442

Physical dodge VR (make 2 quick movements in different directions (physicaly) like back and right. Or back and down etc) triggers Matrix style time slow. (sportive)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/58605

Dear Diary VR (more beautifull menues)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/44874

SkyVran VR BETA (!!!) For water LOD in VR. (no more single color surface as water in a distance. Waves in the distance please)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30571

----------------------------------------------------------------
To get DLAA (needs NVIDIA)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/82179
plus:
https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/502
Also needs a DLAA download from NVIDIA as thats not allowed to provide in the mod)

It also comes with a sharpener to sharpen up blurryness.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, forgot these nice to have things:

Navigate VR (hold maps and compass in your hands, to navigate the immersive way ;-)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/47174

Be seated VR (Order meals and drink in a tavern and eat/drink immersive style. Also, play with a chair behind you and sit on the real chair, if you sit down on a chair in the tavern or on a horse)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/16613

.... EDIT more... I keep forgetting mods:

Immersive Smithing VR (VR style smithing and weapon sharpening etc)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/72298

Gift by hand VR (give a follower new clothes, weapons etc by grabbing them in one hand and pressing the item to their head/body/hand with the other hand. Also give them potions/food by holding it to their mouth. Maybe deactivate the 3 grab loot, or you start looting all the time you grab a corpse to often.)
Also call horse/follower by whistling (hands to mouth leads to whistle and teleport follower/horse behind you)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/99809

drop on death VR (dead NPC drop all their stuff (except clothing) to the ground for you to immersively loot immersively with HIGGS, without a menue)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/98883
