Question About Semi-required Mods
I've heard people say this game more or less requires mods, but I'd be playing on Linux using Steam's Proton service, which poses some potential complications for modding. From what I've heard, game mods that just involve dropping some DLL files into a game's folder somewhere usually work fine with Proton, but games that involve more extensive modding like running EXE files or whatever generally don't work. What kindof modding would I need to have a GOOD experience with this? Just dropping the DLL files into a game folder, or is it the other sort I'm concerned about?

You need:

VRIK, HIGGS, PLANCK, Spell Wheel

And all the mods that these mods depend on. (SKSEVR for example. Make absolutely sure its SKSEVR (for VR Skyrim) and not SKSE64 (for normal non VR Skyrim)

All these work with DLL. no exe.

But thats only a base.
the game will still look and sound outdated. But at least will it apear as something that was almost made for VR.

(the vanilla SkyrimVR has a very basic motion controller support. So basic, that its no fun and repelling people into returning the game. (XBox Controller users will not recognise this problem however LOL)

Hmm.

Of course people usualy suggest using a Wabbajack (Something that autoinstalls a 150GB modlist with 1000 mods, while you sleep or so ;-)

But Wabbajack does not work on Linux.

But I found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/190osn2/linux_tutorial_getting_the_fus_modlist_to_work/

Someones tutorial how to install "FUS" (the most used SkyrimVR related Wabbajack modlist) on a Lunix PC.

So as long as I'm willing to limit myself to playing it in a VR headset with Xbox controller instead of VR motion controllers, I should be fine with just the "drag & drop" mods putting DLL files in the game folders? No need for EXE mods?

No. you missunderstood.

The game should NEVER be played with an XBox Controler, its heresy.

VR controllers (Motion controllers) are 50% of the VR magic.

What I said is:
SkyrimVR without VRIK+HIGGS+PLANCK+SpellWheel = trash that you do not need to buy.

These sre the essential absolute must have mods. the bare minimum to make this game playable.

But hey do not work with XBox Controller and are totaly useless and harmfull for XBox Controller players.

the mods make this:

VRIK: Gives you a visible body, holsters to store weapons physicaly (with your hands), gesture system to use magic without a menue and it fixes the world scale.

HIGGS: Makes your hands and weapons collide with items in the world (Vanilla you do not have collision, your hands pass through everything as if you are a ghost)

With HIGGS you can grab the apple and eat it by taking it to you mouth. Vanilla would be: point to apple, scroll down the list of commands to "eat" and press trigger.

Higgs also allows to loot stuff by grabbing it with your hand and drop it behind your shoulder. It allows to read book by holding the book in front of your eyes. And it fixes the physic engine.

PLANCK: allow to collide with NPC. and to grab NPC (holding your waifus hand or something. Or yank their head back to cut their throats whatever you want).

Spell Wheel: Gives you a Blade and Sorcery style menue.

Neither of these essential mods needs exe.

Off the top of my head MageVR was the only common mod that ran a separate .exe file. However, there isn't much reason to run that anymore as other mods do most of what it does.

I have to agree with Fist though, motion controls are 50% of the game. If you use an x-box controller you don't really need much in the way of mods. Pick whatever graphics mods and flatscreen mods that still work with VR and go.

You'll probably enjoy it more if you atleast use Vrik and higgs with motion controllers though.
