is the 4080 Super enough?
i got the money for a 4080 Super right now, but i know the 4090 is just the king in all aspects BUT... It costs a little more than 2 times the 4080 Super. any insights for a complete newb in the VR scene?

The 4080 Super is way more than enough. Skyrim VR will play on a lot less. Remember it's recommended spec on release was a GTX 1070 . If you add a ton of mods then the extra grunt is very helpful. I used to play Skyrim VR on a 1660Ti quite happily. I currently use an RX6700XT ( 3060TI comparable ).

You have a great card there which should be fine for a good number of years before it's struggling.

Actually it depends on the mods you want to use. (and the headset you want to use)

RTX 4090 (I have one= even is limiting in what you can do. I had to reduce the quality of some things and had to make some decissions about my priorities.)

As for the headset. A RTX 4090 is too weak for playing heavy modded SkyrimVR on a Pimax Crystal (a youtuber tested it with a high end modlist and got 30 FPS). A RTX 5090 would be fine, but even that could be just barely fast enough. LOL

The recommended Spec was GTX 1070 indeed. BUT....
That was for a original HTC Vive (1080x1200 pixel) and unmodded.

People now play with Quest 3 (2064x2408 pixel) and heavy modded.

I started with a RTX 1080ti and a original HTC Vive. It was kinda ok.
Then I switched to a Valve Index and the 1080ti was too weak for it.

I then upgraded to RTX 2080ti and it was kinda ok with the Valve Index.

I got a RTX 4090 and it was perfection with a Valve Index.
Then I got a Quest 3 and now the RTX 4090 only was "Kinda ok".

EDIT:

Generaly, 4080 Super should be ok, with a Quest 3 and say the FUS Wabbajack.

EDIT 2:
To complete this: What also comes to mind is, the tolerance for "reprojection".

Reprojection is a method to double the FPS of a VR game. But it comes with artefacts. It also increases the risk of getting sick. Some people can not stand reprojection, others can. SkyirmVR is very often played in a reprojection mode, because many do not own the CPU or GPU to feed the VR headset they own.

There is
45/90 = game runs at 45 FPS doubled to 90. This is hardcore. Some people can use this, but even many people who use reprojection say thats too much. I read of even RTX4090 owners that play with that mode, because they say, they can tolerate it and want the best looking graphics they can play with.

60/120 = More acceptable value. Still not for everyone. Playstation VR does this by default. I think I recall I read that Quest 3 does this on some of its graphicaly demanding native games.

72/144 = only makes sense on Valve Index, because Quest headsets have a 72Hz mode and could, in this case just run 72 FPS without reprojection, while the index lowest setting is 80Hz.

More GPU is always better in VR.

That said, I started with a 5700xt and now a 6800xt. I've been happy with the valve index at 200% SS and 60/120. Lots of graphic mods in both skyrim and fo4.

Most VR games I run maxed out and am more CPU limited. (3700x)

With the 4090 being both double the price of the 4080s AND about to be replaced later this year I don't think its worth it. Unless you think the 5090 will be unobtainium for several months or you need the 4090 for productivity etc...
