Performance issue on GTX 1080?
So i tried cranking up my supersampling by a little and then my weapons start stuttering like it did with fallout then i turn that low again and in game settings i can only play on medium because if i turn it up to high my game starts lagging and mods just kills the performace of the game i have a regular GTX 1080 i7-7700k and 16 gb of ram... Whats up with this? people with lower specs can run the game on high with good mods, why cant i? it lags the most when im around water or waterfalls or the watchtower where you fight your firdt dragon

My guide has a step by step how to with pictures if that'd help. Try scaling everything back to 100% first (and in game all the way to the left). If that doesn't help may I ask if your turning using a thumbstick, or by turning in real life as there is a stutter fix if your using the thumbstick to turn left and right. With a 1080 keep dynamic resolution off, you really shouldn't need it.

Another thing you can do is download the latest drivers for your gpu and when installing select clean install.

Lastly, are you using an Oculus Rift? or a Vive? or a Windows Headset?

Hey Gabi. Nice guide with pictures to how any newcomers where to go to set the super sampling. However, you have missed out the global super sampling Steam applies under the "Video" tab. By default on a 1080 this will already be set to 170%. The application tab is to add additional multiplier factor to this number on a per-game basis, then the in-game one multiplies in again.

To OP: With a 1080, you should be able to run this game with reasonably high levels of super sampling but just to rule out you're not cranking up too many of the various sliders available, I'd recommend the trying the following to turn all the SS down. After you've checked the game runs smooth again, you can begin to dial ONE of the available sliders. There really is diminishing returns with the SS after a certain level but as you increase the sliders, the load on your GPU can become extremely taxing.

1.In the Steam VR desktop widget(see Gabi's guide if you can't find) under "Video" check the box for "manual override" and turn this down (should be auto set to 170% on a 1080) to 100%.

2.Under "Applications" check that Skyrim VR is set at 100%.

3. Open Skyrim VR and turn the in-game super sampling slider all the way down.

4. Turn off Dynamic Resolution.

5. Turn TXAA on or off depending on your preference of blur vs jaggies (this can be tweaked later)

You are now running the game at native resolution for Vive. If you have an Oculus or WMR you will also have to turn down their specific super sampling/rendering options in the tray/tools provided by them.

6. Check that your game is now running smoothly - Don't worry too much about the graphics not looking great quite yet - we're only interested in ruling out stuff to do with too much super sampling at the moment. If game runs smooth then do step 7, if it's still really bad then look to the end for suggestions on what to try investigating next.

7. Close the game (super sampling changes won't take effect without reloading) and go back and start to dial up the global super sampling settings listed in point 1. Try 150% then go back into game and check again how it is running. If all is well, exit out again and turn this up some more. You probably should be able to reach 200% as long as it is just this one slider you're changing.

At each stage of increasing it, be sure to check you can actually really notice any difference in the graphics as otherwise you'll be burning GPU power for no reason.

If none of this is helping then your problem isn't with the vanilla game and must be mod or rig related. I've installed a few mods that have just killed off my frame rate and I have a 1080ti! un-installation of said mods remedied all my troubles. You can monitor things like CPU/GPU loads and temperatures to ensure it's not something up with your rig.

If you post your mod list, I'll look over it and see if I spot anything that was giving me hassle.

Good luck.

here is my mod list, do you see any red flags in here?

the issue im having is frame rates dropping to around 70 when running outdoors, if im in a city i get perfect 90fps all the time. currently settings are :

Steam VR : 100% on both application and general video sliders which gives
Oculus settings: 0 , no super sampling turned on
Skyrim VR: high settings, SS = 50% , dynamic resolution =off

for a while there I was able to get 85-90 consistent , I noticed the drop when I was headed to Solitude, any ideas?

RIG : GTX 1080, 16gb ram, i7 4790k

Thank yoU!!!

I have all these with the exception of your lighting changes and 3Dtrees.
I'd try getting rid of the 3D trees first as seem to remember that this was causing issues on another thread somewhere. Been doing a lot of forum lurking so can't remember where for sure.

If it's forests causing the frame drops, this is probably to blame as it is quite demanding.

If that's not it, I'd start trying to remove the lighting changes. I have the same system as you and only just upgraded from a 1080 to a 1080ti. You should be able to run 150% SS - I'd suggest using the one in the steam tray or your Oculus one over the in-game version as it is supposed to be more efficient.

I also removed Realistic Water 2 as vanilla looks far better IMO.

Use you mod manager of choice to remove offending mods, update plugins.txt accordingly then test game. If you're still getting bad drops after that, you may need to work your way through each mod to see where the issue is.

Once you've ruled out a mod, you can reinstall it if required or keep them off till you're running smooth.

Were you okay before mods?

Thank you so much for the fast reply! Honestly this has been the best group of people I have ever met on a forum, you guys are so helpful and not condescending Ha ha ha. To be honest I don’t even know if I was getting good frame rates before, sadly the way I found this out was reading a post on here were someone explained how to display frames per second using the oculus tray, once I did that I saw that I was getting terrible frame rates! That led me to My initial tweaking, which greatly improved everything but now that I noticed the frame skips it’s driving me nuts, I will follow your advice right now and remove the three trees and see how that does, and then I will remove the lighting if that doesn’t get fixed and adjust from there! Thank you again for this I will report back in case my findings help someone else.

80-90fps should be totally playable with your fancy Oculus Asycronous Space Warp.

Are you experiencing any judder in your Touch controllers?

I would download this tool:

https://github.com/matzman666/OpenVR-AdvancedSettings/releases

and monitor your reprojection rates as opposed to just the frame rate on its own.

Your mileage may vary with how much reprojection you can stand. None is best but it is good to have it on to fill in any missing frames from occasional drops.

Solitude is one of the most demanding areas in the game due to its massive size. If it runs smooth in Solitude, then it should be great everywhere else.

Ok....it was the enhanced lighting and FX mod...now getting pretty solid 88-90 fps, with oculus SS set to 1.3 everything else at 100....damn I loved that mod...does anyone know of a good lighting enhancement that doesn’t eat your gpu alive? Haha
XmisterC 16 ABR 2018 a las 13:56
I've not touched lighting for this very reason. I will experiment over the coming days/weeks and report any findings back on the forum.

Least you're running smooth now. Reprojection and frame drops suck.
chasemm18 16 ABR 2018 a las 14:13
yeah everything is super smooth now. It was definitely playable before even with the frame drops I was just annoyed because this rig has been amazing for me in every other game, i can run skyrim pancake at 4k and never drop a frame with 100+ mods but i guess VR is just that much more demanding. As for the drops, the only way I knew they were happening was because of the oculus monitor, my weapons never lagged or had any judder, i just noticed if i was running every 10 seconds up the hill to solitude my character would miss a step as if he hit his toe ona rock...i guess im just picky haha Thank you again, hopefully someone comes up with something that can improve the performance via a patch or something. I dont know enough about overclocking GPU's and I dont even know if that would help.
XmisterC 16 ABR 2018 a las 14:42
Overclocking your GPU is super easy. Download MSI Afterburner (regardless of your cards make - I have Asus Strix but still use Afterburner)

Then there's sliders to adjust.
Turn up the power limit to 120
Run game/benchmark and use the built in performance monitor to check what you're boosting up to. My 1080ti Strix OC will go to 2052Mhz.

You can also monitor how much Vram you are using with this tool - very handy to see when you've added one mod too many.
