SKSE trouble, please help
Hey there,

I’m sorry to bother you but I hope that someone out there can troubleshoot with me. I’ve tried talking to friends, none of whom have VR so don’t know what to do. I’ve tried talking on forums and been either criticised for my ignorance, ignored completely, or given ‘I dunno, ask somewhere else’ responses. I’ve tried following online instructions and just had no luck at all. Every time I think I’m getting somewhere, I wind up right back where I started.

I’m trying to mod Skyrim VR. I was told that I pretty much need a script extender if I want to get into the kind of modding that I want to do, so ignorantly I just downloaded the script extender and dumped the entire archive into Vortex…this, of course, caused the game to crash on startup. Realising that this was the problem, I uninstalled and removed that mod and went looking for instructions. Finding a set, I proceeded to follow them as best I could and did the following:

• Download the .zip (get the VR version from the sidebar of this sub!!!) and extract it to your i.e. Desktop (i prefer having it there).

(Done. I extracted the file, even I can do that

• Inside you´ll see 5 files and 3 folders. Ignore the “src” and "actionbindings" folder. Pack/Zip the “Data” folder and rename it to “SKSE_Data” and install it as usual with your mod manager (drag-drop, or copy to the download folder of your manager)

(Here I ran into a bit of trouble and I'm not sure if I've done this correctly. I right-clicked on the Data folder, and went to 'Send to Compressed/Zipped Folder' then I dragged and dropped the archive into Vortex. The file it comes up with says SKSE_Data.zip and LOOT doesn't recognize me as having a script extender even with it enabled)

• Then copy the 5 single files (all starting with sksevr_) and paste them into your SkyrimVR directory (where the SkyrimVR.exe is located).

(Done. The Skyrim VR folder had an SKSE folder and I put them in there. That's where they're supposed to go...right?)

• Vortex: right click the file “sksevr_loader.exe” (inside the SkyrimVR folder) and create a shortcut to the desktop. MO2: add SKSE as app to MO2 and launch it from there!

(Done)

So that SHOULD be it, according to the instructions. Only when I try to double-click on the shortcut to launch Skyrim VR from the SKSE shortcut I get the message 'Error: SkyrimVR.exe not found'.

I'm at my wits end here. Can someone advise me on what I'm doing wrong?

Once you have extracted the zip file to your desktop, just copy everything inside the sksevr_2_00_12 folder to the root of your Skyrim VR directory. That's what I did and it works fine.

Start the game via 'sksevr_loader.exe' , not via Steam. Easiest is to create a shortcut to 'sksevr_loader.exe' on your desktop

I've found that going straight to the source file instead of using the shortcut works for me, but then in game I get a message that sksevr isn't running

I figured it out.

I swear this is my curse...I always figure something out right after I've asked for advice on a group or forum. I'm just glad I didn't embarrass myself by contacting the developers of the script extender, which was going to be my last resort.

It seems I have two folders for Skyrim VR and my PC search took me to the wrong one. Opening it from steam directly got me to the right folder, I copied the files to there instead and now the launcher works fine.

Maybe try one of the Wabbajack SkyRim Mods I found Narsil to be very stable and fun. That way you can have a look at how they did it and eventually, if you still think it necessary be able to mod on your own because the people who did those mods have done a pretty good job. Just say'in
