How to get SkyrimVR to work with Index controllers.
I'm seeing a lot of negative reviews saying it doesn't work with index controllers... If that's your only grip with the game then it can be fixed within 5 minutes.

You need use 1 of these mods

A button fix

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/27027

VRIK's index button mapping (Second file download)

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/23416

You then need to go into SteamVR's interface remapping for skyrim and change it to either the A button fix or VRIK

Now if you want to customize your control layout for skyrim you can use this handy tool

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/16627

It's a remapping tool for oculus touch contollers... but it works just fine with the index.

When you open up that tool, just point it towards the controlmapvr.txt file... This is usually located in SkyrimVR -> Data -> Interface -> controls -> pc

You can change the controls to skyrim for whatever you want... Personally I like using Natural locomotion to run and jump IRL so I changed some buttons for skyrim.

Have fun! The index controllers work great with skyrim if you take 5 minutes to fix it.

There's a little more to it than that, but I agree with you that once you know how to fix it you can do so quickly. Another thing about the Valve Index is that the max frame rate on the headset is higher. Skyrim's engine bugs out at higher frames. So to get through the intro cart scene you need to limit the frame rate. Also you don't have to change the layout using a mod. There is a built in key remapper to the Skyrim overlay.

How to limit your framerate
MSI Afterburner - after launching open RivaTuner Statistics (it'll be in your systray) and set the "Framerate limit" to 90
You might also be able to accomplish this by setting the refresh rate to 120 in the Steam VR settings.

How to use a community mapping
steam vr overlay > settings > controller binding > skyrim > find a community binding
the Mr Oxidized one is great, and has a mod to add hotkeys. You can then customize the controls from here if you want.

You have to admit though that for a relatively new full price game (Skyrim VR was released a year and a half ago, and wasn't free to people that bought Skyrim the other two times it was released on PC) this lost developer support pretty fast. Buying the new VR hotness and having Skyrim be unplayable without making these changes is a bad look.

EDIT
The least Bethesda/their Steam team could do is sticky a guide for Index users.
Changed the frame limit to 90. Water glitches out at 120.

I don't get it. I'm about to refund this game because it's unplayable on the Index and all the fixes I get are written in barely coherent english

What's up bud? I'm sure someone will help. Have you installed mods before via nexus? A lot of people coming into Skyrim VR have hundreds of hours in the game and almost that messing around with mods, so we might skip over a few steps we assume people know.

Yeah this is BS that it doesn't work on Index. I would refund if I could.

Well, if refund is possible for you anymore, then may it worth to fiddle around a bit.
SkyrimVR has it downs, that for sure, and often enough told. On the other hand, if you are willing to fiddle around, then the advice to take a look at nexusmod its a good one.
There are tons of cool mods, which enhance the gameplay, and spending a bit of time, to install certains mods, will pay out.

To point out 3 Mods:
VRIK (which give you a interactive body) you literally not need to go in the menu for weapons, or spell, drinks. (which fixes with the controller bindings the Index Proplem)
Higgs: Gravity Gloves like in HL Alyx
Locational Damage: Does what you would expect. headshot ect ...

most mods works fine.. stick to Skyrim Special Edition.

However if you never modded Skyrim before, then there is a learning curve. With the Index Controller + VRIK its working pretty good, if you are willing to fiddle around ^^.

best

Here you go man, these are all auto-installing modpacks that will fix the game as long as you do a bit a of reading.

You move a couple of files and click the play button. You can do it in like 20 minutes.

trying to do this myself. The struggle that I am having is all of the guides I am following say to start up skyrim vr without any mods first, but then it thinks my controllers are vive wands and don't function so I can't get any distance into the game before I start modding it. I would prefer to use vortex or MO2 as they seem more configurable long term, but I have no idea what I am doing. So do I install skse vrik before I even start up the game? Because I can't even control the menus half the time.

I don't recall starting the game to be necessary for the control changes I mentioned.

Have you tried VRIK avatar and Index bindings ? (see link above)

*edit* Also check this bindings mod for the Index, with installer and details of what bindings are set

So I'm having a similar potentially related issue. I don't have any issues installing the mods or anything but I cannot open the bindings menu to select any bindings at all.

Like when I click Skyrim in the steamVR controller menu to edit bindings nothing happens.

Also my index controllers do nothing because there's no bindings for them at all

My vive wands work fine and can be edited and I also have no issues editing bindings on any other game it's only Skyrim

I think it may be a steamVR issue. I did try reinstalling both Skyrim VR and steamVR to no avail. Anybody got an idea why this would happen?
