IF YOU USE THAT GTX980TI, MOST LIKELY YOU MAY NEED TO DROP THE ss TO 50% WITH ASYNC ON AND EVEN ADD ALWAYS ON REPRO. EVEN WITH A 1080, i NEEDED ASYNC ON WITH 100% NATIVE RESOLUTION. i AM NOW RUNNING AT 100% SS with async on and reprojection. It is that sharp.
In game SS or SteamVR SS? Because max SteamVR SS is 1000% isn't is? and you'd not be getting that if a 1080ti can't do above 2.0 (200%) SteamVR SS. In game Skyrim SS maybe, their SS setting in game at max slider might not be anywhere near SteamVR's max SS setting
edit: Are you using dynamic resolution aswell or is that setting off? If its on you wont be getting full resolution all the time, you'd be better off turning off dynamic resolution and trying to get a constant resolution first
Id recommend going with either the samsung headset, the vive normal headset or the oculus. My general recommendation would be the oculus but if fallout is super important to you then just the normal vive is the way to go. The extra resolution is nice no doubt, but it isn't high enough for it to really matter once you really start playing.
Skyrim VR you will run with no issue, Fallout 4 you will run but with some issue (though still it will be very playable if you turn down some settings).
In relation to what you said about grabbing a 4k monitor, I can support that interest. I honestly can't go back to 1080p - recently got the ASUS PB287Q and while it has no HDR or isn't OLED or anything fancy like that I can say the 4k resolution is amazing. Gonna pair that 4k res with the same GPU you have. I'll put the Vive Pro on the backshelf for now, it's in the pipeline though.
In Steam VR, I can't go any higher on SS than 2.0. No matter where else I put it, it just defaults right back to 2.0, it's just stuck there and no idea how this can be changed. I used to do it back when I had 970s. It would run like crap if I went higher than about 1.5, but I could set it all the way to 5.0 and it would stay there. Not sure what happened with Steam VR that is causing that.
Thats an odd issue, never had that happen?
yep 4k screen here with a 1080 gtx, can't run alot of current releases @4k 60fps but i get about 40 to 50 fps constently and thats find, i'd rather 4k over 1080p at 60fps.
Difference is amazing. Most older games, say from last year and before can be ran at 4k 60fps. Witcher i get 4k 60fps on my 1080 gtx
would have got a 1080ti but that wasn't out when i got my 1080. Pretty sure the 1080ti is the price now what i paid for my 1080 back about 1 year ago now.
Samsung 4k screen. older model that requires display port 1.2 to get 60herts but thats find as the 1080gtx has thais. HDMI only goes up to 30hertz, sucks because i'd buy a ps4 pro or xbox one and could plug into my 4k screen, my TV is only 1080p
@Molag Bal
I have a 980ti and I would buy a new GPU before the new Vive pro.
I have personally found that Skyrim VR can get a little choppy with TA, and dynamic resolution off. But with SS on. (this to decrease the blur.)
So now I have the super sampling turned down, and the grass distance set to about 1/4.
It still looks cool, and it plays well. ✨
But sadly the tree billboards, and mesh lod's can look quite nasty at times.
I really dont understand this as I have VorpX, and have played original skyrim with about 300 mods installed, and it was about the same performance as this with 5 mods on. (so far)
But Im not a fan of VorpX, so I got this, and am pleased I did. Its a good game.
Not sure if there going to be a work-around, for a performance boost, like with FO4 VR.
If anyone reading this knows one, please let me know.
I cant afford to pay £1000+ for a 1080ti, and TBH I would still wait until after the 2080s drop, if I could.
Just a couple thoughts there.
And as a last point, Again there are quite a few new HMDs in the works, and slated for near future.
And I'm sure I am not alone in thinking Knowing, that £800 quid for a slight upgrade to the existing Vive, for existing Vive owners, is a complete insult.
But again, unless your desperate for a slight DPI boost, and earphones, it might be prudent to stick with your current Vive, and wait a little, and see how the prices stack when there is a LOT more competition.
As well as new features from new "players" bringing HDMs to the market.
Just a thought, hope it helps..
OFC, you might be rich, 💎 (unlike a lot of us.) and then none of this matters. so "go for it."
oOoOo
The quality of the vive pro is like vive being smudged visuals vs prestine visuals but you still see SDE on both. Less on the pro.
I wish I can explain it better but if you have cash to throw around, I highly recommend this. If you are tight on a budget, not worth it.
