Fallout 4 VR Not Starting (No Mods)
I bought Fallout 4 VR and played it thru several years ago. I can't recall if I had a Rift at the time but now I have a Valve Index. I reinstalled Fallout 4 VR and now it won't start. When I try to launch the game, it puts me in the "sunset mountain scene" with a pop-up splash window that says "Fallout 4 VR, Next Up" and it just sits there. After a minute or two the pop-up disappears and I'm just left at that mountain scene. I started wondering if this game even works with the Valve Index?

By the way, clean install of Fallout 4 VR. No Mods.

Prior causes of Fallout 4 vr won't launch in the forums:
1) They launched it before SteamVR was running.
2) wrong version of DirectX (needs 11.1 or later).
3) a missing dll. ( Look at comments #11, 12, 13 in this thread about a missing dll:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/611660/discussions/0/2987539784438685582/ )
4) A lot of people have fixed other programs' failure to launch by reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2013 64 bit.
5) a modded prefs.ini file with an illegal variable, so if you modded, maybe you messed it up. Also, try deleting (save a backup if you want) directory C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Fallout4VR\

Prior fixes in the forums for SteamVR/VR games won't start:
1) Update GPU driver or try rolling back AMD driver ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/0/4137187221851895565/ )
2) Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2013 64 bit.
3) You must have SteamVR installed. Try different versions of SteamVR by either switching to the stable branch or to the beta branch. If you are an oculus user, you still must have SteamVR for most steam games.
4) If you are using a laptop, see if your laptop has an option to disable the integrated GPU, either via the laptop manufacturer’s control software or in the BIOS. If no such option exists, try forcing both the game and SteamVR to use the dedicated GPU. If you need instructions, see here ( https://www.windowsdigitals.com/force-chrome-firefox-game-to-use-nvidia-gpu-integrated-graphics/ )
5) If you are using a laptop with an AMD Ryzen processor, a very particular fix that has helped a number of people is to go to the Device Manager, then disable and re-enable the integrated Radeon graphics.
6) Reinstall steam. ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/0/3601219829870413249/ )
7) uninstall the Citrix remote desktop display adapter in device manager ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/698260/discussions/2/3598968030048391526/ ) https://www.windowsdigitals.com/force-chrome-firefox-game-to-use-nvidia-gpu-integrated-graphics/
8) unplug HMD, uninstall USB devices (also for steamvr starts but stuck in floor) ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/1704080/discussions/0/3758852249519942171/ )
9) Uninstall Virtual Desktop ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/1125240/discussions/0/4039230885219702181/?tscn=1703542225 )
10) Change openxr runtime to SteamVR. Open SteamVR settings via the ≡ button in the top-left of SteamVR on your Desktop. Go under "OpenXR" and select "SET STEAMVR AS OPENXR RUNTIME" for your system. Restart SteamVR and reconnect then see if your games launch. ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/2/4036978698796173614/?tscn=1703637799 )
11) If unreal engine 4 game on 10th or 11th gen intel cpu, try this fix ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/590690/discussions/0/3055111535926023249/ )
12) Don't launch SteamVR with elevated privileges, and be careful about it inheriting elevated privileges from steam ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/2/7056649947876468494/?tscn=1710526349 )

Thanks, man!! I was a little depressed when I read your answers because I had already tried most of these or they were already confirmed as being good. Until I got to the thread about the missing DLL. I already had Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 (x64) installed but later on in that same thread, they pointed to Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4. It was THIS, Update 4, that I seemed to be missing. When I downloaded it and ran....it only gave the option to "repair". I had already "repaired" the regular 2012 install and it didn't help. But after "repairing" with the Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 install.....then the game started working. Thanks so much!!!

Here is the link to the "update 4" VC++ 2012 in case anyone else has the same issue:
