Must use mods

Since this is a Bethesda game its due to have issues and require a few mods to get the best experience. From what I've seen the following are must use mods.

Fallout4 script extender (required by other mods)
Fallout4 VR Tools (required by other mods)
Idle Hands (adds in hands, very simple, but really nice to have)
10mm Pistol Resize (required for Idle Hands)
Fallout 4 VR Optimization Project
FO4VR Mod achievements enabled (so that you can still get achievements)
Kabuto VR (adds in a visible visor/helmet with each different power armor, very immersive)

Additionally if you own Fallout 4 with all the DLCs you can copy over the DLC files to FO4VR, you would however need to download a few mods to fix a few issues that comes up because the DLCs weren't optimized for VR.

Just use the F4VR essentials on wabbajack (mod auto installer.)

If you want an amazing experience i also suggest adding Whispering Hills and removing ambiance overhaul from that.

Ditto on Essentials. May not want everything, but a good starting point then remove bit by bit after.

I just installed the essentials mod and after getting out of the cryo pod in the first vault, things are much darker now. The lights around the vault are not casting any lights and just look like white blobs.

Is this what it was like for you as well? or did I install it wrong

The wabbajack description explains how to install it fairly easily so don't worry. But, what you need is;

Fallout 4 GOTY edition
Fallout 4 VR

You move specific files with DLC in the file name from fallout 4 GOTY edition data folder TO fallout 4 VR data folder.

Boom, DLC installed to f4vr.

Make sure you do not copy everything over. Just the parts that start with DLC
