It's the only building in the foothills map. It is a bit up from the bottom of the map and a bit right of centre. I found that the ambush only triggered when I approached the house from the zone transition to the graveyard and walked to the house from there.
I had gone by that house many times before without anything triggering.
As mentioned above make sure you have gone back to town and walked into the guard compound at the top of the town and triggered the conversation with Gwen about Siegfried not being there before truing to get the ambush to trigger..
I think you can help the situation by updating the quest log with a bit more clear direction at each step of the way.
I also had a problem because the quest said go talk to "Siegfried" but I didn't remember that name and had no idea who it was. Well I was not too worried because I could just go to town and open the map and mouse over all the little dots for the people one after the other until I find him.. right?
Nope! Because he ran off there was no dot for him, and I didn't realise when looking at the map that the person I talked to up top was no longer there. I wandered around aimlessly for a long, long time.
Then I just randomly walked into that courtyard and it triggered the dialog about Siegfried being gone.
Just having the message in the log saying go talk to Siegfried was not helpfull. Up to that point in the game you only talk to him one time very early on. Sorry but I don't think you should expect everyone to remember that name so many hours later.
